Gut hook recommendations?

A lady I know wants to learn how to gralloch small deer here. Not looking for knife suggestions, as she already has one, so looking for gut hook recommendations to keep the job simple & neat. Looking at Mora, or paracord cutters, or seat belt cutter etc that will do the job, Thanks, `FG.

Thanks for that. Is that the same as a swing blade minus the knife, I hear they are good for zipping down the legs?
yes, use one on all my home kill and any deer i skin. well worth the money. zip uo both front and back legs and just peel it off.

I agree with ACM's recommendation the EKA swingblade is a cracker and the zipper has a great profile; it's my main field combo. For the larder though I use a Mora Roeing knife (which the small straight blade with the ball t the tip - strange name).

think its designed for removing the roe from fish, its popular to eat in scandinavia

My recommendation for gut hooks if you lady friend has got one I would suggest talking to a grinder and grind it off.

Stop using them and learn to use a knife properly.
I knew someone would say that, but its going to be a bit off putting for a young lady to make a mistake first time. Have to say the lady in question is pretty good with meat prep, she is French, & doesn't seem to mind rolling her sleeves up & helping out with the carcasse prep, its almost second nature to French country people, English girls would run screaming out of the yard, & carry on faffing around with their nail jobs & hair straightening duties. Her boyfriend once shot a hare here, but only wounded it, she whipped out her penknife, ran over to it, & cut its throat. Wow, respect!!!

Out in the field if I don't use my regular knife blade (a 5" Victorinox Rabbit) I use the folding Outdoor Edge ZipPro:

If you're specfically after a gut-hook I also gave the StatGear a try-out for a while - it works surprisingly well, being wickedly sharp and with an ergonomic handle:

In an effort to go even more minimalist, I also bought the Opinel No.12 Cutting Hook, but I've not given it a try in anger yet, so can't report on how it performs:

Back in the larder I previously used the F Dick tripe knife, but I have recently switched over to using a Mora roeing knife instead for skinning:

I use the Outdoor Edge zip blade version. I bought an EKA swing blade which seemed like a good idea, but didn't like the potential bug retaining property of the hinge system, so swapped to the fixed blade type and a couple of Moras.

Good for opening belly and leg skin, but have also used it for tunnelling around anus and diaphragm on occasion.

Cover two bases with one knife, get an EKA Swingblade in orange, good knife and reverse it for good gutting/skinning plade

Whilst a lot of people don’t like them, I feel gut hooks have their place especially for those who don’t shoot that many deer and therefore don’t gralloch frequently (like me). Like Alantoo I have an EKA swing blade which is a good knife/unzipper, but you really have to get into the hinge to clean it. An old toothbrush will do it, but in the field/dark it’s not ideal. The orange handle outdoor edge is not a bad buy for £20 or so. Easy to wipe over if doing more than one animal in a row.
