H&N 45gr Bullets - 22 Hornet

Loaded a batch of these up today. Had them a few years. Cheap as chips.

I'm trying to replicate a group I shot back in 2017, but could never replicate using 10.5gr of H110. Also ordered a LEE Crimp Die, which will hopefully help with consistency.

Just a cheap rabbit round for sub HMR money 👌🏻

Had an opportunity to use these a couple of times over the last two weeks on the rabbits. Super impressed with how effective they were.

Hit everything out to 200 yards and a lot cleaner than the 40gr V-Max which made things much easier for the dog to retrieve.

Safe to say I’ll be sticking with them in the 22 Hornet. What a cracking cheap and effective load.

Got some of log of a pal to try couldn’t get them to group on same bit of A4 never mind anything else … went back to the usual and back to thumbnail ….
No idea why didn’t work

Are you 100% certain you “pulled” that low right shot? I only ask as it’s just the kind of out-of-the-group shot I’ve come to associate with my 22 Hornet.

You need to fix that. My CZ doesn't do that. I haver often opined that my CZ Hornet is one of my most accurate CF rifles to the extent that I quit cataloging groups in my records. ~Muir

Fixed it with a Lee Factory Crimp Die!

Good man!
It's odd. One of the most diminutive cartridges I shoot takes the most time to reload. I do neck size Hornet. Trim. Flare the case mouths, seat and, yes, crimp. Before we went prairiedogging last year my girl friend wanted to check zero on her CZ 204. I had my Hornet loaded with 34 grain HP. When she was done, I sat down at the bags and shot the intersections of the 1" grid pattern on her sight in target. Three consecutive shots cut three of the intersections in a row. The Hornet is capable of some excellent accuracy.

I keep reading about these H&N bullets..... In form they look like the Winchester 46 grain HP ~Muir

I’m happy to admit I’ll never realise that level of accuracy and consistency with my Anschutz 1432. The Brno hornet is clearly the way to go but best to get one before they stop making them.

I will also admit that my Anschutz was handed to a friend on the condition that he handed me a new CZ 527 American when I next saw him. (Then $400 US) He leapt at the chance despite my warnings that 3/4 to 1 MOA was all I could get with it. Accuracy in the CZ line is never an issue. My son, being the kind and thoughtful type, would only shoot prairiedogs in the head. I have seen him kill them out to 200 yards. He didn't seem to think it much of a feat -but, then, he carried that CZ with him all the time...~Muir

It’s what a wrote at the time so I’d assume so.

They were awful with Lil Gun but performed well with with H110. Just a really cheap and effective load that costs much less than factory HMR but is far more capable if I bump into a fox while on the rabbits. Going to load up some more this week.

I think I FL resized these and just flared the case mouth. Don’t recall bothering with the crimp but did buy a LEE one after reading your recommendations. I’m sure I tested it and decided it grouped better without. Didn’t make any notes unfortunately. May have to test again.

Hard to imagine it shot better without. I've never seen a Hornet that didn't benefit from the trim, flare, seat, crimp routine. Stranger things have happened though...~Muir

I suspect they were moving too fast and becoming distorted, they have a limit of something like 2400 fps so higher than this you could potentially run into problems

Your post made me realise I hadn’t shot my 22 hornet in quite a while so last night I loaded up some RWS cases with exactly 13g of Lil-Gun, Federal pistol primers and 35g V-Max with a Lee crimp. Weather conditions this morning were good but a little misty so rather than putting 3 or 5 shots on each target I went for a 10-shot group which includes the first shot from a clean barrel:

The group is just a tad over 1” so far from record breaking but at my reading that’s 10 head-shot woodchucks in the bag but feel free to correct me!

Strange that, must be the bullet or load.
13gr Lil Gun and 45gr Sierra sp for me spot on at 100yds.
