Headtorches

WB if the torch is mostly for gralloching a standard petzl head torch should be enough how much light do you need

Used Petzl for years. Always been very happy with them, until I bought the LED lenser H7. Not touched any other since. So bright. Focused. Good 'quality' light and batteries last forever.

I have been using LED Lenser head torches for ten or twelve years. The first was a the Classic headfire and I now have used an H7 rechargeable for the last couple of years, wonderful things. The headfire was replaced with a new one free of charge after over 6 years when the wires went at the hinge.

(which in my case would always require me to remove my shooting hat of choice) .

I often wear mine over my hat, with no problem. The brim can cast a bit of a shadow over your feet, but great in wet weather.

I got one of these to trial for work in hostile environments and crappy conditions. So impressed I ordered one for all my colleagues, in two years we have never had a fail and everyone uses them daily.
Enough power to search for and gralloch a carcass with variable power for tiptoeing in the dark.

and I would be suspicous about the high output claim. 500 lumens is a lot of light. I think the H7 are only rated at about 225

I for one have used a Petzl for a few years now, and find them fine & dandy.

5 light modes - 3 continous and 2 strobe
Red LED & strobe setting is particularly useful for signalling ( god forbid you'd ever need it !)
Max. battery life: 185 h.
Also a power level indicator.

What more could you want ! apart from a Lightforce.

Rgds, Buck.

PS, I do carry a backup torch (Lenser P7) but hardly ever use it due to the LONG Batt. life of the Petzl.

Led lenser H7 here too, expensive but bloody useful. I have an older petzl the difference in output is crazy, torches have come on miles in the last decade.

This one is fantastic, so small and just a couple of AAA batteries go in behind the bulb making it so light and easy to carry.

I bought the one advertised by mmbeatle on here awesome thing and cracking distance on the beam.

Hi

Alpkit.com do head torches - fair price, good service, and pretty good kit.

Mine has options for white/red/green light - recall around £15.

Having spent a small fortune on various cheapo Cree and Petzel headtorches, mainly from China I would like to get a decent one to aid Gralloching etc.

What are your experiences with headtorches, is there an outstanding one available at sensible money?

Regards WB
If you REALLY want to push the boat out try Ay-Up HT13's from Australia. They are phenomenal. My son sent me some and I have used them for practically everything. Rechargeable Li-Ion pack, red filters for walking in the dark.
There is no comparison with Petzl products. I use them on searches with the Coastguard and get bollocked for blinding my mates. Just check out the website out of interest.

Best one I've had so far - that is, not the brightest, the dearest or the one with the most bells and whistles, but the most practical for shooting - is a Fenix HL30. Light weight, easy to stow in a pocket and £35. Its got three white modes, maximum 200 lumens, which I've found ample - I have no trouble using it to pick up rabbits and foxes in the dark, and a red LED with its own button so it can be switched on without cycling through all the white light modes. This is excellent for reloading and negotiating obstacles discreetly. White beams are fairly wide which I prefer for picking up, its more natural on the eyes than a spot when you're trying to find something. Gralloching with it is a doddle and the medium power setting is more than enough light. Runs on two batteries. Needs rechargables though. Duracells don't last long enough.
