Heathrow - Export of Firearms Issues - Current as of June 2018

I stand corrected regarding EasyJet, I can vouch for Virgin they did not charge on trip to SA only a month ago, for those who have not been to SA or any other safari destinations don’t let all this put you off. If you do your research and prep taking your rifles is straightforward (BA may be the exception to this by the posts I have read) pick the right carrier and take the right paperwork and it’s Africa here we come !!

I normally use Air France and use my frequent flyer points. So long as I’m under my checkin weight limit, firearms and ammo, have not been charged for.

P.S. Yes, I’m using the dreaded BA this year but I’ve got two Business Class seats, including rifle, for “only” £1064 to JNB, return. I already have ammo down there.

No issues travelling through Heathrow with SAA today. They were quite keen to ensure my rifle wasn’t loaded though!

Border force will issue a temp export document before travel or at heathrow .You will need one for DIY entry.

Does anyone know the charges or have a link to charges for flying a rifle plus a box of rounds to Edinburgh from Heathrow. Got stung a few years ago flying to Germany and want to get an idea of how much I’ll get stung this time.

Cheers

I flew BA earlier this year: £125 for rifle, £125 for ammo box, £65 for having three pieces of luggage . I will not use BA again, for any travel.

SA export certificate requirement.
Emailed Border Force on 19th June for a trip departing 2nd August. Certificate dated 12th July received in the mail today, 14th.

Yes, I could have got it on departure as I’m going through LHR this time but I prefer to have all my paperwork done and copied.

At JNB I went to the “hidden office” by carousel 7 to find that BA firearms go straight to SAPS office.

On return at LHR my rifles came out before the carousel started with a G4S guy who stood nearby. As soon as I got my checked baggage we went to Red channel and he phoned Border Force.

From plane door opening to clear through everything and sit down in the BA arrival lounge to a Full English was 60 minutes.

I had recently visited Bisley, UK to attend an F Class event. I travelled with Emirates and they are very efficient as far as clearance and Documentation is concerned. I used their online declaration form and uploaded permissions from both ends, along with details of my Fire Arms Licence and invitation letter. After 3 days I was emailed an authorization letter along with a copy of my Declaration form with instructions on how to go about it at the Emirates Desk at the Airport. Upon landing into the UK, the Fire Arm and Ammo box was at the Customs, I showed all necessary paper work and within 10 mins i was out of the Airport. No Hassle at all.

Upon my return flight, at the check in desk, I again showed all paper work, then went to customs, where I also got my VAT refunded for some Ammo I had purchased. After inspection of all documentation and the Fire Arm itself, an Emirates staff escorted me to the scanning machine where the Fire Arm and Ammo box went through the scanner. At that point me and my Fire Arm departed. It all went smoothly and this was at London, Gatwick.

A word of advice: Those into hand loading often carry either bullet tips or empty brass into their regular checked in luggage. International flights usually don't have an issue with this and you don't normally need any permission to carry something like that. A couple years back i got into trouble with just plain tips and brass during a transit my flight had made! It was a long ordeal, at the end I got away with it however, my tips and brass were confiscated as it was considered "Ammunition"! So double check with the airline before you carry something like that if you don't have prior permission.
