Can anybody give me some sound advice on which type /make of bino to purchase ,

I havent got a blank cheque book as i have just spent a big lump on rifle set up and dcs1 course . All though told the wife ive had it for ages the newness never wears off

I use Minox 8.5X43 HGs and have been very impressed with them. If you have infinite funds then I think Swaro are the way to go but in my view all of the Minox punch above their weight and are at a pretty good place on the price/performance graph. I paid £400 for mine a few years back and if you search there may be some good deals still available. I've never heard anyone say a bad word about them so they are certainly a name to have in mind when looking around.

You sound like you are a serious deerstalker ..... so I would expect that the general consensus on SD would be..... that you should not cut corners on the quality of your glass. The same applies to rifle scopes.

The leading binos brands are Swarovski and Leica. Most serious stalkers have something like Swaro 10x 42 or Leica Geovids.... but they don't come cheap. Maybe look out for a 2nd hand pair if budget is an issue?

The difference in the quality of the optics really shows in the first and last 1/2 hr of daylight....which is often when the deer are out and about.

Evening Paul.

Didn't realise you were in the market for some binos. You could have peered through my Kahles at the weekend.

I have the 8 x 42 set. They are excellent - more than I need really. I wouldn't get anything more expensive just incase I drop or scratch them.

I think they were about 500ish. I'll check though if I can find the receipt. They were from Swillingtonshootingsupplies.

Well done again with the DSC1.

Dave

No Budget-Swarovski
Budget- Minox 8.5x43's, I had a pair when my Swarovski got damaged, for the price they are absolutley cracking. More bino for the money, not heard anything bad about them.

Search around, you can get some good deals on them £200ish...

Khales binos £579 from swillington. as they are from the same stable as Swaro i think they may be a bit of a deal :thumb:

8.5x42 sworo's save up their worth it told my wife i had em years which was ok till she saw an advert saying they were new out.
back to the drawing board####

Hi mate next time your up my end on holiday and before we go for that pint as i've told the mrs but several to us:roll: we could pop into the local nature reserve they do demo days or if not just ask them to show you the range they have they have there own range right up to swarovski and you will see the different between cheap and the good. Also you need to no your budget.
PS make sure your up here for the red rut its amazing to see and you are normally only about 70 yards from it.

i have a set of nikon monarch 8x36 and i have tried them with all of the the top makes and theres nothing in it i say try nikon and as many makes as you can before you buy

Starting bid's a bit steep on these, but it goes to show that top optics are available without spending a kning's ransom.swarovski binoculars | eBay
Or you could try your local Viking optics centre or London Camera Ehange for 2nd hand glass.

Try a pair of Steiner Ranger 8 x42 , RRP around £500, mine cost around £ 350 (new) including delivery from Germany bought on amazon. Swarovski's @ £ 1600+ would of course be nice but sometimes you have to live with your budget.

I bought a pair of steiner sky hawk 8x42 of amazon for £279 posted, there very good value for money. I know there not swarovski, but there still very clear.
:-D

Swarovski EL's are the cheapest binos on the market as i bought mine in 1996 and if i were to put them on Ebay they would go for more than they cost when new due to exchange rates and inflation. Still as new with box, papers etc... The new HD 8.5X42's are tempting.

Anyone have any experience of Hawke bins (also on a budget). Heard they're excellent in terms of value. Have used a pair of 8x42 (I think) and they were crystal clear but didn't have any Swarovski or Leica to hand to compare directly.
