Help with scope mounts on a Ruger 77/22

I’m struggling with the proprietary scope rings on my Ruger 77/22. The mounts don’t sit well in the base rebates and the rings but my scope (50mm Objective) too high for my liking. As much as I try the scope is not sitting well and it’s proving difficult to get a good zero with enough room for manoeuvre.

Has anyone had any joy with the rail adaptations for the Ruger and if so which ones?

Thanks in advance for any input.

I have a rail on my 77/22 that I bought from Optics Warehouse. The attachment of the rail to the rifle is a bit tenuous and I had to shim between the rear action bridge and the rail. Saying that it has held zero pretty well so is probably adequate. If you want some pictures I can get some although I don’t have a scope on the rifle at the moment

Thanks, some pics would be really helpful thank you.

IIRC Burris make Weaver bases that fit Ruger rifles so you can then fit whatever rings you want, had a set on a rifle a few years ago.
Thanks for that. Did you fit it because you had a specific issue or did you just want the flexibility?

Fitted them because I wanted to fit Burris Signature Zee rings which have plastic inserts to 'build in' between 5 & 20 moa of elevation (1" version, 30mm enable 10-20 moa) in order to shoot targets at longer ranges.

I have the Leupold rings on mine with the front ring extension, perfect for a 50mm obj and clearance for the bolt handle, without being over high.

Ruger does make rings in several heights, odd that they don't sit square. I have 2 M77MK2 rifles 2 No1s and seen more owned by others, none have that issue. If the factory work is indeed crap my method would be shipping back to Ruger with a letter detailing the troubles. Another interesting thread for me to ponder.

It’s an old rifle and it could just be wear and tear. It’s only the front ring that’s on the **** the rear one is fine. I’m not even 100% sure that this is causing the issue of getting the scope on the target but I’m just going through a process of elimination. Instinctively it feels like a rail would give a good base to mount a wide range of rings which would give more flexibility. I guess ultimately it’s a cost benefit exercise as the rifle is not worth much...... but it’s satisfying fixing problems!

I'm sure the 77/22 should have different ring heights? As in one higher than the other.
Yes, I think the newer ones do. This is an older model.

That sounds sensible.

Thanks, what rail or adaptation are you using to fit the rings to the Ruger base?

I understand, you cant ignore rifle issues, best wishes. Rails do work. Perhaps the optic has issues? Hard too figure the trouble from across the pond. My last lack of zero was a loose base on my No 1V and made me nutty until I removed the mounts and bases, lock tite used all is well now. I wish I had found a 77/22 with the boat paddle stock.

The scope is the other obvious variable. In fact my local range have gone to this possibility first. I am less convinced as it is a S&B hunting scope that, whilst a few years old, is in mint condition so showing no signs of abuse, damage or tampering. I am going to try the scope on a different rifle as part of the overall fault finding exercise. Thanks for your input BTW, much appreciated.

Post a couple of pictures of your set up to show what the problem is. I've had a Ruger 77 and thought the Ruger system worked well so am having some difficulty visualising your problem.

I don't have a Ruger any longer, but always found their mounting system solid. Is your scope inch tubed? I have a few sets of mounts in my drawer of bits.

That’s really kind. Thank you. I am 30mm so it sounds like I will miss out on this opportunity.
