Hello matey peeps, this is an issue I was hoping advice on the best way forward.
OK, I am 74, I vgood health according to my doctor, but having lost 3 shooting buddies in their mid to late 70s in the last 3 odd years, 2 of whom have gifted shotguns, air guns and FB rifles ( currently gathering dust on a local RFD, s to me, which has compounded the issue, I refer to owning 6 shotguns myself my wife owns a further 2, plus I have 3 FB sako stalking rifles, fitted with expensive optics, a ruger. 22lr plus a fac rated FX air rifle, and scopes, plus pre 12ftp Bsa air rifle. In a nutshell, I am looking to gift, with the exception of my. 243 sako kit, the FX air rifle, plus my clay bashing Kemen, To my son in laws, daughters ( shotguns) ditto, my wife wants to gift her 20b silver pigeon to.
The problem is, my son in law who lives in Aberdeen, and, although he is keen on inheriting thousands of pounds worth of guns, is not getting very far, sourcing a friendly FB rifle and or airgun club, willing to help him obtain an fac and the ridiculous airgun licence, under supervision etc. Both he and I have contacted the Aberdeen FB club, by email and left phone messages, but we have never had any response. Aberdeenshire plod, have said they would want a newbie to join a club etc, but how do we do this? If anybody has and Scottish club info?
And now we come to our friends the NRA novices courses. I was intending to pay for my son in law to join the NRA and enrol on their programme, however, I have been quoted over £1200 for Stuart to sign up and attend the modules, which include it would seem, handling gallery rifle, black powder, stupid long distance target models, plus a few other modules, none of which he would actually benefit from. Basically, we need to get him trough the safety, gun handling, shooting at 100 to say 300 yard targets, via. Scoped 270 and 308 stalking rifles. Again, apart from the cost of the NRA system, the 12 plus months the NRA seem to be saying it will take to obtain full membership and the Bisley safety certificate, it's obviously very annoying. If I pop my clogs ( sorry to sound morbid) what the eff is going to happen to over £60k worth of weapons etc. To sum up, how are we as the shooting community going to pass on our guns to beneficiarys and keep Scottish and Surrey plod onside??

Does your SiL have any interest in deer stalking?

If so, perhaps he could start by approaching the local North-East Scotland branch of the British Deer Society?

A locally run DSC1 might be an easier way to achieve an introduction to "safety, gun handling, shooting at 100 to say 300 yard targets, via. Scoped 270 and 308 stalking rifles" than a course that entails a long journey South and such a large expenditure?

Minnie tanks for your feedback, apretiated. Apologies, I have not given the full picture. I have 2 son in laws ( to whom I will be for ever grateful for taking the daughters off our hands) one is based in Aberdeen and the other in Camberley, just a few miles from Bisley. I here what is suggested re gifting to game keepers, stalkers etc, however, I have already gifted a set of binos to a deserving person, ditto an aya shotgun, several sets of sticks, fishing rods and I am currently a member of every shooting, gamekeeping and fishing charities, I am also leaving money to the GWCT, Gamekeepers and stalkers welfare fund, and angling trust. So I feel I have done my bit. Besides, I am looking at leaving, what is very good perfect conditioned kit, for the enjoyment of my family. I really cannot believe there isn't an NRA affiliated gun glub in Aberdeenshire to which Tim could join, or somebody Scottish Plod are happy to take him under their wing. If solutions to creating user friendly entrance to shooting systems are not available? When I was applying for an fac years ago, I joined the ham and petersham GC, attended I think it was 13 range days under supervision, and plod granted the licences with the backing of the club secretary, easy peasy. Hopefully a solution to pass on weapons smoothly is found soon🤞
