Herons

I am having the occasional visit from a heron to my garden pond, I have fabricated a guard to stop anyone falling in, along with this I have used fishing line around the edges on electric fence posts, yet he has landed directly in the one pond, any help will be greatly appreciated.. I cant do the obvious and take a photo, because there's no back drop!

A friend of mine with a similar problem used 10 pound fishing line crossed over the pond. Sort of the same idea of cables crossing prison exercise yards to prevent helicopter access.
Reckons a couple of sudden disruption to the herons landing by unseen lines put them off and he took them down. The line around the bank doesn't always work because they land on bank then walk in. The shock of being knocked out the air on approach seems to work.
Good luck with your endeavours.

A friend had the same issue, he was told paint a lump of polystyrene to look like a rock, anchor with a wire to the bottom of the pond, the heron tried to land on the rock ,fell in off the wobbly "rock" and never returned?

My aunt has a teckel running freely in the garden and it loves to be visited by new "playmates", but the "playmates" usually don't come back after greeting it.
Even though she has quite a few fish in her garden pond, she doesn't have any problems with herons, or cats for that matter.

Years ago I was round at my dads when the neighbours house burglar alarm went off - knowing they were away, we went to investigate.

Nothing showed ill of the house in the back garden, so went to look at the neighbours rather splendid pond full of Koi - that’s where I almost got my head taken off!!!

Essentially he was an engineer that had set up a PIR sensor connected to wind screen wiper motor with a frigging 9 iron attached which would sweep the pond. 😆

Being a big kid, I tested it a few times - have to say the power of it was pretty pokey - I can only assume it was to deter herons. 👍

I have tried all the fishing line ideas, I have set the line back from the ponds edge, criss crossed the pond etc, its unusually persistent, we have watched on our cctv, I almost was able to throw a coat over it once as it got tangle up!!

I have been plagued with herons. Sometimes family groups of 3-4 birds.

The fake ones don't work at all, they sometimes attract real birds.

They can get by trip lines, they are very smart and patient.

For a fairly small normal koi pond, the only solution is to net the pond. Or have a pet who likes to play with herons

You have built a garden pond to attract nature. It’s worked and attracted a beautiful bird to regularly visit. Enjoy it fir what it is.
