Backstops and/or the lack if them seems to be a problem for all shooters who hunt around/near farms/houses, roads etc. As for legality...it's usually legal until someone in authority says it isn't. Then it's time for the lawyers....

It's the reason I stopped hunting our Hog Deer in the flat, swampy country of eastern Victoria. Every where I looked there were houses, farm buildings in the background, paddocks with stock so nah...not for me.
