...on a plywood deer target how simple it would be to pivot a marker which could be held in place horizontally behind the target by a balloon in the kill zone. Pop the ballooon the kill flag pivots vertically to show above the target...

I remember back in the less-unfree days when we could shoot pistol that some blokes improvised an excellent Practical Pistol dropping target. I can't remember the details after over 15 years, but it went something like this:

Visualise a plywood frame supporting a Figure 11 target vertically, facing the shooter:



The Figure 11 is held vertical against the tension of a bungee cord, which, if the tension were released, would pull it down horizontal.

The end of the bungee cord is held tight by being linked to a clay pigeon with a hole drilled through it.

When the bullet breaks the clay, the elastic tension of the bungee cord is freed and snaps the target down into the "Dead" position.

I repeat: the details are hazy, but a rig like that would make excellent fun for the investment in time of cutting out a few muntjac-sized silhouettes.

This is the wide cellophane packing tape. I just gave it a quick wipe with a lightly soaped scotch brite kitchen pad after the tape was applied to the florescent paper, dried it off with a paper towel and painted it with..."matt".... black paint. ** I made half a dozen targets in about ten minutes. The orange dot was a pricing sticker from an office supply store: About 200 of them for a couple of dollars.~Muir

** If I don't, a coating on the tape keeps the paint from coating evenly.
