Hornady 6.5 PRC low velocity

If only you had a local gunshop that could make you some super fast and accurate ammo....

Seriously though, all ammo manufacturers suffer from lot to lot variance
100fps is the kind of ES you can expect from a single box of factory stuff sometimes

Is that REEEAAAAALLLLLLY the reason you missed?......
I’ll take any excuse I can get… 😁

The first box of Hornady Outfitter I tried in my Sako S20 chrono'ed at 2920fps v's 2960fps on the box - that was more than good enough for me
I bought some new stuff and chrono'ed it while checking zero
PoI had shifted but so had the MV - I suppose the two are related after all
MV was now 2778fps
That came as a shock - when I run out of that I'll definitely be homeloading as factory loads other than Hornady are very hard to come by in my neck of the woods

Hornady are mean when it comes to pooder. Their CM ammo is also under loaded but again accurate.

I have always been suspicious that it was to create enough of a gap to justify the PRC but I have never had the pleasure of reloading one. If the intent was 140gr at 3200fps for prs limits then factory ammo is well under loaded ?

Actually didn’t they have to download the 7 PRC? Carbon ring issues. Aka lots of pooder, a tighter neck than traditional rounds and geezers that have never HAD to clean their rifle before ? Seem to recall seeing something about that

My PRC homeloads get 3150 for 143gr, so it shows just how under loaded the factory ones are!

Mungo if you take a look at the 7mm prc there was a massive uproar about the the stated velocity being sometime up to 200 fos below box stated I wonder if they’ve go over to the same line as the 7mm and there just necking down possibly ? I would also expect a barrel to speed up after 100 or so shots definitely sounds like a hornady qc issue so glad I reload for everything

I have been shooting a 6.5 PRC for 4 years, mostly using factory Hornady 147gr ELDM.

When I first got it, I chrono’d them at bang on the box claimed velocity - 2910 fps.

Over the last 6 months, I’ve had problems with it apparently shooting low. I chrono’d the most recent box. 2800 fps. So a nearly 100 fps drop in velocity.

Has anyone had a similar experience? I’m wondering if this is a systemic problem, just a particular lot, or something to do with my barrel.

Barrel is a 24” lothar walther, fitted new when I got the rifle.

I’d be very grateful for suggestions.
Corrosion or erosion in the barrel ?
Your factory ammo has changed in the load or batch ?

It's tested in there setup prob in a airless tunnel.
There ammo is ok at best! but to get the best out of your rifle its better to reload.20260603_184305.webp
