How clean does a roe skull have to be for measuring?

Cleaned up a bit better now and the dried out weight is about 593g so fingers crossed. Going to meet up with Chris Rogers soon to get it measured then it'll be back to Steve for the mount!

I would guess with that weight, it will dry out to about 520 and think it will make a silver.

Very nice head

Stratts see my post "usual guessing game" with pics of one just done. My regime is as follows

Skin off head and dump in bucket water up to coronets. Leave for minimum 4 weeks changing water occasionally. Will stink so keep in a shed or in larder prep room
Then boil, will need a max of 30 mins in my experience as everything is so soft by now including that gristle at nape of skull ( Using mora knife gently scrape anything still attached) and eyes just drop out, no pulling on optic nerve.
No need for jet wash which can smash nasal bones and also strip off antler colour if careless

Put in bucket with fresh water and a good dose of Biotex washing powder for a week. This will remove any remaining grease

dry, wrap in kitchen roll pushing into brain cavity, eyes etc and then cover with double folded silver foil Leave enough space at top to pour in peroxide and leave for 40 mins I still have the super stuff

Don't forget to fish out the nasal bones from the boil soup and superglue back on post bleaching when all dried

That's some mammoth prep job! Mine go from attached to the deer to peroxide on in about 3 hours, factoring in cups of tea and cleaning the patio after I have pressure washed brains all over it! :D Just rinse off the 'hair bleaching type' peroxide after a day or so and job done.

Stratts, You got that thing measured yet?

Chris

sure its c 5 weeks elapsed time but the actual time spent actually doing anything is about 45 mins!! and the brains just dissolve/rot in the water and you pour them out Don't get that white mess jet blasted into your face!

Pour the brains out?! Reckon that would give me the boke! Must be howling when you do that.

As I do my boiling in the house I try and keep it as fresh as possible otherwise it will be the last time, if you catch my drift!

I am just tying them to a tree now and letting the besties do the work. Then a quick blast and peroxide. job done. Handy if you are doing a few.

Well the good news is I finally got to see Chris on Monday and the better news is it's a solid silver medal at 121.4 points! Really rather chuffed and will shortly be back with Steve to finally get the shoulder mount done too
