Howa 1500 mag conversion

Hi all. What’s everyone’s opinions on the mag conversion kits for the Howa 1500?

my new one is in .22-250 hogue stock with standard floor plate internal mag.
Many thanks
Dan

I’ve got a floor plate in .308 and the mag in my.243. I do like the mag kit and will probably get one for the .308 but the release catch is easily knocked which is it’s only problem but there is someone on eBay who makes a guard for it at about £20 which works well!
Hope this helps!

That’s great thanks I’ll check the guard out aswel.

Looking at fitting a more tactical style stock aswel. Fancy something a little different.
Thanks a lot

Wasn't a fan of it and went back to a floor plate. Felt a bit cheap & tacky and extended an awkward distance without being aesthetic.

Not for me

The release catch is a problem waiting to happen.
I have the mag kit on my .243...
Thanks to the input from above I’m about to look on eBay for the guard referred to.

I’ve done a lot of night shooting with my creedmoor, the mag has never been an issue!

What are you guys doing with your rifles for it to be an issue?

my .308 one is a bugger for falling out due to a light release, it now gets used entirely for range work, my .223 is a totally different kettle of fish, very secure, so it may be a generational thing, with the earlier units being more prone to easy release ?

The magazine release doesn't feel well thought through. I've never accidentally dropped the magazine at an inconvenient moment but I'm always aware how easy it would be to knock the release and accidentally dropping the magazine.

Although it may be more a fitting than design problem on my rifle, if I have the bolt closed on an empty chamber, the magazine locking mechanism will not always engage when the mag is inserted into the well. To get positive engagement of the magazine locking mechanism I have to open the bolt.

It possibly isn't the best system but as long as one is aware of the issues and takes sensible precautions, one can live with them.

I adopted a "tacticool" elastic band solution to make sure the magazine doesn't drop out. Not necessarily the best solution but it works for me, albeit one that leads others sometimes to ask if my rifle is held together with elastic bands.

I’ve got the floor plate in my .308 as the larger rounds slide back over the plate into my hand when emptying, but in my .223 I found that they went left and right and I kept dropping the odd round, which is a pain in the dark. I’ve put the mag conversion on it and it’s loads better.
