Sad news, a real character, I shot my first red with Hubert on the hill. We later tried for a roe, he sent me to a high seat, I climbed the ladder, I could just reach the seat, only a monkey could have climbed into it - or Hubert.
RIP H. Such sad news.
He would have written a good book on his shooting exploits.
H and I had a few crossed words many, many moons ago but they were soon forgotten.
My sincere condolences to H`s family and friends.
Admin. Is it possible to put `Life Member`or something similar below his forum name?
That's Sad news. Never had the privilege of meeting him in person, but we had a common interest in the 7x65r and communicated via the SD on this subject a number of times.
He had a wonderful photo of him as a younger man with a red stag and a double 7x65r Merkel rifle.
Although I had not seen Hubert for many years I had the pleasure of his company on many occasions during the 80's & 90's, we stalked together in Cumbria around Penrith and he stalked with me in Norfolk, I slept among his tele's and trophies, shared his mouldy cheese and suffered his brews but to be in his company was an experience that will make me smile for the rest of my life.
He taught many of us many things and passed his skills on to those of us who took the time to listen and watch, he was one of the "Fathers of British Deer Stalking" and someone who I am proud to have known and shared time with. He leaves the stalking world a better place for his involvement and dedication over the years.
Thank you Hubert for all you have done for so many.
I never met him personally but had many a marathon phone call with him. Fantastic man knowledgeable almost beyond belief, full of stories and anecdotes he was an unwritten book a true loss to the world of stalking, and budgies lets not forget he bred those as well.
He will be missed on here, and all of us I'm sure, not just Admin, would like to extend our condolences to his nearest and dearest.
Having spoken to someone this morning,l would just like to let everyone know.
Hubert' interment is tomorrow (12th) at 1pm at St Michael's Church, Addingham, (near Glassonby).
Following this there will be a Tea at the Roundthorne Hotel Penrith.
Bought an early Alan Wood knife from Stag 1933. Only contact I had was a very interesting single call with him. Glad I bought that knife and had the call. He seemed a real gent on my one brief contact with him.
