I am always keen to give something back to the sport a love, which is why I am part of my county's HAD team.
I am also interested to know how other ares and organisations deal with training stalkers and gamekeepers to do this volunteer work.
With deer numbers at an all time high, they are inevitably going to come into contact with vehicles on our very busy roads.
From experience I can tell you that it's not always as simple as you might think!
With all the above in mind I am looking forward to attending the BDS HAD course to see how others are prepared for this work.
Are there any SD members booked in to attend?
I see the course is sold out.

Please check this operates in your area as many Police forces are now completing this in house.
Completed my course two years ago and Kent and Met Police do not use any one.
Other forces are doing this now as other members on this site are saying they are no longer wanted.

But do not get me wrong I found this course interesting and rewarding and would say do it.
👍

Both Hampshire & TVP still operate HADS, based on the same level of risked base training which their operatives attend; however different operational practices and policies apply.

I have been on the Wilts call out list and the Wild life rescue centre too and have attended many incidents over the years.
Had a briefing by Wilts Police when the HQ was on the Wilton road, it was so far back I cant remember when, all I can remember is being told that being on the list did not qualify those attending to obtain a pistol !!
I have attended incidents where the Police have been in attendance and attended places where I was told what to find with no police in attendance.
I have also attended places where the carcass has been removed before I got there and by the look of the area and blood there it was obviously dead and been removed by a hungry member of the public !!
Never considered a course needed but who would run such a course, don't know any others that have been doing it as long as me without complaints or problems.
Due to ill health during the last two years I have now withdrawn from the list, then I am 80+ so need my beauty sleep, no more callouts in the middle of the night in pouring rain ;-)

All Hampshire’s HAD’s including the New Forest keepers have done constabulary run training at police HQ armoury which included a set of scenario based set ups using police officers, vehicles and people in roll play to make the scene as realistic as possible, the HAD’s are asked how they would deal with each set up and what action they would take.

There is also classroom training done with BATRA. BARTA | British Animal Rescue & Trauma Care Association.
If other forces are use volunteers for this work then the volunteers would need to be trained in a similar way, even working as a volunteer for the constabulary you would be representing the constabulary and they would make every effort to make sure you where trained appropriately because if something was to go wrong then it would come back on them and the question would be asked, "What training has taken place"
personally I believe that keepers and the stalkers with the right training are far better equipped to deal with wild animal dispatch then AR offices and have more tools in the box to safely and humanely deal with this work.
