Hunting Ontario

Hello work are planning on sending me to Toronto 3/5th August wondering what the hunting situation is like there. Understand there’s some hunters Ed , licenses and guide requirements. Principally I would be keen for a black bear if possible (think it is though dates a little confusing) however will look at other things.

Costs seem to vary massively from $3.5k to $7k ideally any guidance would be appreciated.

Hey there,

I’ve never hunted in Ontario but can point you in a direction. Here’s a link to the Ontario hunting regs (click “access link” then download PDF). Black bear is page 78.

Here are a few excerpts:

Non resident hunter accreditation requirement:

Non-residents who are hunting in Ontario for the first time must be at least 16 years of age, and must provide proof of accreditation from their home jurisdiction, provided that it has hunter education requirements that are equivalent to Ontario’s requirements.
Plan ahead: Non-residents must submit an original or certified copy of acceptable hunting accreditation by:
• contacting the Natural Resources Information and Support Centre at 1-800-387-7011 (accreditation processed within 15 business days of receipt, allowing non-residents to buy products online before arriving in Ontario), or
• visiting a participating ServiceOntario or licence issuer (allows non-residents to buy hunting products immediately).

Non resident black bear hunting requirements:

All non-residents will be required to hunt through an operator licensed to provide black bear guiding and baiting services.
To hunt a black bear in Ontario non-residents must have an Outdoors Card, a non-resident black bear licence, a bear tag and a black bear hunting validation certificate. The non-resident black bear licence is valid in both the spring and fall seasons. The black bear hunting validation certificate can be obtained from a bear operator (operator of a tourist establishment, guide or air carrier) licensed to provide black bear hunting services to non- residents. All non-residents must hunt through
a licensed bear operator and get a validation certificate from them. NDMNRF no longer issues validation certificates.

Here is a link from the government of Ontario regarding black bear hunting with an outfitter:

Your best bet is to contact a licensed bear operator to inquire about a hunt. They’ll explain all of your requirements (documentation, etc) and will make the experience painless. I’ve lived in Canada all my life and it’s still a pain for me to go through different province’s hunting regulations. They’re all very different and can be complex. Having one resource (an outfitter) to explain everything to you will help a lot.

Best of luck!! Keep us posted!

Cheers il make some enquiries. I guess I could fly anywhere from there as well if it’s easier in other states.

There have been some record bears taken in Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Alberta. You could always price it out in different provinces and balance whether the extra airfare makes it viable. Flying within Canada can be very expensive compared to the USA.

How long are you expected to be in the country?

I am supposed to be there for two days with work with a day either side but was contemplating tagging on a holiday. Thanks

Negative would need to borrow. Can’t imagine my colleagues would be enamoured if I rolled up with it. Sissy gun more than enough lead though 😜
Possibly a minimum calibre for bear whilst anything’s possible I’d rather throw a decent lump of lead at something that’s the potential to rip your arms off and beat you to death with them before using you for supper.Mind you you may only be used as a tooth pick myself that’s a different matter I’d be a feast for the full family lol
