Hushpower shotguns.

Are they worth investing in?
Thinking about approaching a farmer about roost shooting in a small copse on a farm. There are some houses that are not in range but would hear the bangs.
Just thinking about throwing in the suggestion that I'd be happy to use a hushpower shotgun if it would improve my chances of gaining his permission.
TIA.

I had 3 shot mossberg 20 bore. The good points are yep its obviously quiet. I used standard carts and quiet enough but with the reduced velocity I'm told even quieter.

Downside - it's like swinging a scaffolding tube!! Im no digweed at best of times but really struggled to get on with hush. The can interfere so much with my sight picture & just horrible in hand. I had mine less than 3 months.

Got a 20 bore mossie Hushpower. Not much noise difference from the butt end between subs and regular, but from a bit of a distance are quieter. Subs can be pricey.
You have to adjust your shooting style to allow for the van on the end. Covering the bird with it helped me. Then fitted a pic rail and a red dot, which I find also helps with point of aim / though most don’t use them.
410 hush will be quieter yet.

They are a good tool to have in the box - as Ben says very unwieldy and bloody heavy - mines a 12 pump

If it’s a roost why not snipe them with an air rifle?
I used to do it with a.22, but like many other things from the past, it’s frowned upon nowadays

Got a 410 hush - great around the farmyard on ferals and sensitive woods on squirrels. Racking it feels louder than the shot.

Quite cumbersome in the larger gauges, hence why I went for a 410, but would say my 410 is only effective to about 20 yards using 3” subsonics.

Maybe only offer the farmer that you'll use a hushie if he raises the subject of noise. It is a working farm after all.

I've had both a 20bore Mossberg pump and a .410 single barrel baikal.

The mossie pump is, as others have described, an absolute scaffold pole unless you practise with it regularly. I sold mine too. The .410 is much better but is expensive to feed. It still comes out on occasion, mainly for squirrels, but is a bit range limited.

If I was starting again, I'd try to get one of the 20b hushpower over and unders as the compromise between pointability, noise, range and ammo cost.
