Identifying a Parker Hale

I recently found myself in need of a 7mm rem mag to shoot out to no more than 80yds in woods. I did not want to spend much so to cut a long story short I have purchased a Parker Hale super safari deluxe ( it is marked as such) in 7mm rem.

Information on the net seems very patchy so I would like to know a little more about the model and what the chances are of it having reasonable accuracy ( if not it goes).

I will post pictures when it arrives but for now the information is as follows -

It has a plain ( not gold coated) trigger and a Schnabel forend. The wood is ok but in to photos nothing special. The action is a mauser k98. Any idea of age etc would be useful

Thanks

In 1975 I had a new PH 1200 Safari De Lux in .243 and it had a 'chisel' forend in black ebony and a 'gold' trigger so although yours sounds similar they might not be the same model.
I always remember the PH were very popular then and known for longer than usual barrels, 24" I think and were very accurate and reliable.
There was a break in their manufacture for a few years and then some started to re-appear but I believe were made up from a lot of spares bought as a job lot by somebody but there weren't many of them and then that stopped too.
Anyway, back to your original question, if it has been looked after there is no reason that you won't have a good rifle, a very 'clunkey' bolt when open and closing but when closed and locked a very sturdy and accurate rifle indeed.

Not aware of the Safari versions having a schnabel forend
It should have a gold trigger, colour not material. the 3 way adjustable Parker Hale trigger unit came with a gold coloured trigger on this model
The stocks and fittings were often shared between various versions

It should have a rosewood slant cut fore-end tip and flared rosewood grip cap
Monte Carlo Roll over cheek piece
Vented recoil pad
Trigger guard floorplate release and an alloy floorplate, possibly heavily decorated with design or scenes
If sight are intact they came with single and triple bladed rear sight and a single blade foresight and hood

As for accuracy, They tend to perform very well and if you limiting it to 80-100 yds I doubt you will have a problem unless it has been utterly abused.

This was what I was expecting form the Web. The stock seems to be a roll over Monte Carlo and the recoil pad is vented. I am suspecting is a very early ( if selling) or old (if buying) gun.

The comments on accuracy sound promising.

My old PH 1200 Safari. .308. ( circ late 70's)

Santa Barbara 98 action, IIR. Quite a rattle from the bolt, but fairly bombproof.

I glass bedded it, and it would easily shoot sub 1".

Steve, That is almost identical to the one I had, the only difference I can see is that mine had a thicker and vented butt pad and the fore end was a bit more 'Chisel' shaped. I can't quite make out how your fore end is.

I bought it second hand, so the butt pad may not have been original. Too long ago to remember, if I'm honest.

The forend tip was rosewood, and very angular. The roll over cheek piece was nice to use. It also had what was called, again if my memory cells are functioning, a Wondhammer (sp) palm swell, which really made for a comfortable grip.

A 4x Gold Crown was more than adequate for young eyes.:D

misc 022.webpHere is my Parker Hale 1200 Super Safari in 270 Win. It has a K98 action we think it was built about 1975 ish.
I put a Timny trigger on it to start and that improved it dramatically. It now has a Boyds thumbhole stock and is a very accurate rifle.
