I ran into three blokes from the mid coast of NSW during the week that were in Vic for some Sambar hunting. They were novice Sambar lads but had Chital,Rusa and Fallow scalps to their credit. They did show some photos of very nice Rusa stags that they had to their credits.
They weren't doing really well unless one can count a small stag that was laying out in an open area that had watched one of the hunters walk basically in full view to it to be rolled over. Obviously a wounded deer that made no effort to get away from the human approach. It was in poor condition, too poor to even think about eating it so no meat was salvaged. The terrain was a bit rough for them also.
The mate and I had visited their camp for a cuppa and a beer over the week with all of the additional BS,calibres,dogs,4wd`s,projectiles blah blah discussed and giving them a few tips to help them out.
Seeing yesterday was their last hunting day I took them up to a "back location" to where I had seen two deer that morning. One a spikey that offered me nothing and the other a hind that was high above me looking down in 5' high bracken,I had only found her head and ears by the fact that my old dog "told me" that there was a deer above us. Finally I found her face and actually lay down to check her for a possible crack and the pups decided that was the time to sniff the end on my 7mm barrel......anyhow she had had enough and honked and was gone in a flash. There was a lot of deer activity and thus the visitors were shown several places to simply sit and wait with all of the usual new chum advices given. That was mid arvo and they were then to go back later on for a few hours sit until dark.

I went home had my dinner with 'her' and five mins before dark we heard one shot up high about five k`s road trip away that rolled down the valley.

"Oy they may have one, good on them,at least one has had a crack"

Waiting a while I drove back out 15 mins later and saw their head torches up ahead and immediately thought "schitt I should have brought the dog"

G`day whatjasget?

I missed!

Wtf was it stag or hind?

Neither, a black dog stopped ans pi$$ed on that tree down there, the one with the bullet splashed bark on it.It had a brindle dog with it too.

FUUCKK !

Any deer seen?

Yes a hind walked along that bank towards me

Why didn't you take her?

Well we all had agreed that it had to have antlers as we already had that spikey arse end in our camp that you and Chris had given us.

I took a video of her

Ah, I believe you now ha ha!

Footnote I did go and have a look at the tree in case the hard pill had perhaps done a pass through without a bone strike but there was no evidence of blood etc.

Minus five here this morn, there was a frost and a half and my walk was finger tingling and after running the poop out of the dogs I headed down to the hunters camp for a look at the hind video.

As i was looking at the in camera 2" square screen it took me a few seconds to realise that it was a " phuckn spikey" much to the amusement of the videographers mates...dig dig etc.

I did say that as it was a beaut young spikey that it was the best eating model and another good one to take home, however the film was a great capture to enjoy viewing long after any turds would have been flushed if eaten.
