Introducing myself as a New Member from the USA

..or even M40   - the M24 is Army issue & post-dates VN!!

...not that rare...my Win 70 is a 2nd year of production, pre-War Super Grade in 30-Gov't-06 with a Lyman 48WJS aperture sight. I'll not tell you what it cost me!!
I have a couple of very good reference books on the Model 70; the pre-64's were something else. Keep thinking of sending mine to IBA to have a Douglas barrel fitted & Unertl mounts.
I used to know a chap that was even into Model 54's!! Never seen one for sale, yet...

...though the ones over here possibly smell worse too & take a more unhealthy interest in chickens

Welcome to the forum. I was lucky enough to meet a fellow of yours when he first visited the UK for a talk - he had a bigger tally than Carlos & was next to unknown until a book was written that mentioned him...Chuck Mawhinny - he's a great bloke, even though it takes a few minutes to pick up on his accent - as he's a Southern boy like yourself!!

Yes i know Chuck. He is living in Oregon. I dont really know if he is a Southern boy. He worked in Oregan with the US Forestry Service. Havent seen him for a few years now. He was here a while back judging a Swat Team Sniper Competition for our local Sheriffs Department. A friend of his was living about 30 minutes from me and had Chuck stay there with him while he was here. Yes on record he had more confirmed than Carlos did but Carlos was estimated to have well over 200. Carlos was credited with only 93. By confirmed: Must have an Officer see the remains. Ever heard of an Officer out in the field with only a Sniper and his Spotter? Well those days are gone for me now thank God. If you are thinking about a new barrel for your rifle i would recomend a Bartlein or Kreiger. Not in any way telling you what to do. I have a .260 barrel from Bartlein. It took a total of seven rounds to break in and shoots great. Bartleins are also known for being a fast barrel also, mine is giving very near 6.5x284 velocity. I'm comparing it to the 30" Savage barrel i replaced after only 780 rounds. Now as to the Win. 70, it is pre-64 (1957) according to the win. ser.#. It is in the 30/06 cal. It has a 10x Unertl on it and shoots as good as my issue rifle did. I tried some 190 grain SMK'S over 53-1/2 gr. of H-4350 and was amazed. I would love to take it out to 1000 yds. just for knowing what it would do. No chance of this in the swamps as i'm limited to much shorter distance here. Well got to go pick up grandchild from school. Nice to hear from you and thanks for the welcome. Keep in touch. .............SEMPER FI!

Welcome. Imagine you may have a few stories that will liven us up a bit.
Hello howa243. I am guessing you are a .243 fan? I had a Ruger .243 many years ago but i could not make it go fast enough due to its 20" barrel so i regretably sold it. It had the best looking wood on it that i have yet to see today. Wish i had it back, but that is as we say, "water under the bridge". I sold it for $500.00 with a 2x7 Leupold (dumb). As to the stories, not really. Stories are just that, stories. Some people like to tell WAR STORIES to people to impress. I'm not one looking to glorify war as i believe it is a waste of good men and material. If the people at the head of the Government were the ones that had to fight a war, you could bet your boots there wouldn't be a war. THERE ARE NO WINNERS in war, only survivors. I was a lucky one. Far to many were not. I only did my job. Not proud of what i did nor ashamed, just a MARINE doing what he was best at. .............SEMPER FI!

Welcome Sargesniper. Enjoy your shooting and hope things get easier in the US with your legislative issues soon.

ATB,

Scrummy
Thanks for the welcome Scrummy. Yes i hope all this will go away but i will not hold my breath. I'm afraid we're in for a rough 4 years. It is really funny to me how these people in the Government think. Take away my weapons to make me safer! If anyone can convince me of that then i will gladly give them up. If all countries would just examine SWEDENS law, maybe we would all be safer. Maybe i'm just another dumb MARINE but i can think for myself and reason out the situation. Why can't they? Here i go again, my blood boils when i start to talk about Gun Control. Sorry to bend your ears so hard, forgive me. Some day a light bulb may turn on in their heads but i'm not holding my breath on this one either. Hope i haven't offended anyone here. Not my intent at all. Just uncontrolled rant. Thanks for listening to a disgruntled MARINE. ......SEMPER FI!

Hi Sarge - Welcome!

Nice to find a fellow Model 70 fan - I think we're few and far between in the UK. Is your 30.06 Pre 64, Post 2008 or the dark years in between?

I'm currently using a push feed .243 but planning to replace it with a post 2008 CRF and build custom 6.5x55 and 300 H&H rifles using M70 actions.

Stoat's Tail

Hello again Stoats Tail; I re-read your comment about your Win. 70 and all of a sudden it hit me, IBA? Is this the firm in TEXAS? If so, i would like to converse with you on this before you do it. Please dont send your rifle before! Thanks .........SEMPER FI!

welcome aboard sarge you will often see the word charlie mentioned on here we are refering to the red fox not the V C that you know as charlie although ours is just as cunning lol
Hello d foxxer and thanks for the welcome . I've never heard that terminology for a Red Fox. Do you fellows shoot them or just chase them with Hounds like i've seen in some of the older(and best) movies? Over here in my neck of the woods we shoot them because they eat most of what we eat! I was thinking of how funny it would be if the foxes were armed, how many would venture out and persue such an elusive, and as you stated, cunning creature? A whole different ball game if the target shoots back! You fellows have a much different terminology than i do. Still trying to figure out. Stumped on currency. I know of the Pound but to me that means like a weight measurement, (funny to me, not to you though) Not poking fun at you or your country, don't take me wrong. The last thing i want to do is offend anyone here. Just another dumb MARINE making a dumb statement i guess! Anyway, good hunting and shoot bugholes. ..SEMPER FI!

Hi sarge wellcome to the forum regards biker1
biker1 : Thanks for the welcome. Sorry it took so long to get to you. Lots of response to my post. Trying to get to ya'll as soon as time will allow. I'm not much of a typist either so that slows things down too much for me. I had no idea there would be so many responses. Sort of bit off more than i can chew,so to speak. Are those Deer in your picture profile? We aren't allowed to take but one a day. I don't hunt any more. I have come to a point in life where the mind writes checks that the body can't cash. So i am now a paper puncher. My last hunt that i went on was very rewarding. I took a 400 pound Mule Deer and a 750 pound ELK in the mountains of COLORADO here in the States. Too old to hump the mountains any more so i gave up hunting all together. Once you hunt there, you don't want to hunt any where else. The mountains are just beautiful to the eye. I'm sure there are places that are just as spectacular but i've not witnessed it. Thanks again and sorry it took so long. .........SEMPER FI!

Welcome to the site.
I have a question, when would you consider too old to hunt in the mountains?
I agree, hunting in the mountains is awesome.
Cheers

Hi

I was the one that mentioned IBA - but it was a mix-up! MEANT to type TBA = the firm run by Mike Lau

I know of IBA & the Chandlers from their series of sniping books (I have the full set, most signed copies/1st editions)

As I said though, it's a project I have been thinking about doing for some time...but the logistics involved in shipping a rifle from the UK to the USA are somewhat complex; putting it mildly

Hi Saddler sorry for mix up,my fault. PM me. It is TBA i was thinking about.

Hi Richard; It is not only age to consider in my case. There was a chemical called AGENT ORANGE that was used as a defoliant. It killed vegetation quickly. Unfortunately it has and still continues to kill an awful lot of us since its use also. Anyone who was in VIET-NAM was exposed to its deadly effect. I am one of the unfortunate ones or maybe one of the fortunate ones, depends on how you look at it. Due to surgery for Lung Cancer i no longer have the capacity to breathe very well in high altitude environments. I am pushing the 70 year mark as we chat. An old carved up MARINE you might say. So that is why i say i am getting too old to play the game anymore. No matter now,at least we can look at the bright side, the DEER and ELK are a little safer for it. Hope you were not bored with the explanation. And CHEERS back to you ........SEMPER FI!

saddler: Check to see if PM went through. Also, do you have the book "ONE ROUND WAR? Not sure if ROCKY wrote that one but if you have it i'll tell you something about a part of the book. .....SEMPER FI!

Thank you for the welcom deer man. Friendliest people here at SD. I really feel good about all the positive talk from all so far. I take it from your user name that you enjoy hunting. It was a passion for me in my younger days. Couldn't wait for Friday to roll around so i could pack up and head to the deer camp. Did this for many years before retiring from work and eventually hunting. I sure miss it though, i must say. Nothing like it in my estimation. Some clubs use dogs to run deer with but i always liked the challenge of one on one. Don't hunt anymore but still very active in shooting. My primary weapon of choice for deer was the .280 Rem. With a 160 gr. Nosler Partition in my .280 there was really something for the deer to be concerned with. Nice to finally get to you. So many have welcomed me and i am trying to answer all. Good luck on your next hunt and think of this old MARINE when the hunt is on. I would like to think i were right there with you when you squeeze off that round. ............SEMPER FI!

Thanks for the welcome John, great site here, lot of friendlies, love it! Like you user picture, makes one want to be a dog! Once again thanks for the welcome. ......SEMPER FI!

Hello back Spoony and thanks. Trying to get to all that have welcomed me but it's difficult. Been bombed with replies which is good for me. Bad when replying back. Typing is not my strongest point! I just told saddler they need to replace all these buttons witn a Jewell Trigger just for my sake. Nothing like a Jewell. Got to go for now, keep in touch. ........SEMPER FI!

Thank you younggun22: Is that 22 your age? When i was 22 i was fighting the Indians. You will be fortunate to not ever be in that situation. I appreciate your respect for all who served. Our numbers are growing smaller by the day. There aren't many younger generations that show respect or care for that matter. Times have changed over the years, not for the better in my opinion. Well i don't want to get into that. Lets let it lie by the wayside and carry on. Sorry it took so long to respond. Lots of replies to tend to. Good luck in your future endeavors. .........SEMPER FI!

Taking this time to say Hallo as i am new to the forum. You should enjoy retiremnt,

Hello to you Bos en Dal Safari's: Welcome to SD. These fellows here are the nicest i have found on any site yet. You can expect to be treated equally i'm sure. Yes i have been retired since 2005. The only bad part is i went from a good paying job to a non paying job (wife with too many honey-do's). Can't get out to shoot as often as i would like, but i get a lot of reloading time in. How about you,Retired? Getting much trigger time? These fellows will help if they can. Enjoy your stay and thank you. ...........SEMPER FI!

Wow,with a job/business like that i wouldn't want to ever retire. Never been to your country but have read a lot of stories. Can't afford the travel now anyway so i have to resign to wishing and dreaming or just read some more. The animals there are a lot larger and nastier than i'm use to. What rifle/caliber do you back up clients with? Do you require a client to shoot for you before going out in the bush? I bet you have seen it all! Even if i won the lottery i still could not hunt. It sure would help financially though. Well good luck on the next hunt and keep safe. ......SEMPER FI!
