Hi every one, I’m new to stalking only been stalking since October but have had a good few deer already. Iv just been granted my licence, I have slots for .243 & .270.
Im looking for my first rifle have not got a massive budget so I am looking at a second hand tikka m595 or a new Mauser M18 what are the pros and cons to each rifle. I know to spend the money on the glass but All advice is appreciated. Cheers

Welcome from Essex, my .270 is a Rem 700. Marine Jim 165 has just brought a M18 so look him up on here and drop him a pm.

If the Tikka is in 270, it will be a M695 I think. - A 243 would be a M595 -- Names apart, that model range of Tikka is an excellent choice. They just work and keep on working. Accuracy is as good as any rifle. The action is highly suited to being re-barelled should it ever be needed.
I had a 243 M595 for many years before I gave it to my son as his first CF rifle. It is still going strong. The finish I think you will find to be a bit more refined and better finished than the Mauser. I was disapointed in the M18 finish the last time I handled one.
Buying second hand it should be possible to test (depending on the seller/RFD you choose)---- Not easy with a new one.
If possible get a low round count used rifle -- 270 barrels sometimes get shot out within 2000 rounds.

I shoot an older Abolt Hunter in .270. Beautiful short-lift bolt with probably the best cartridge-follower ever designed, flush-fitting removable box magazine, great trigger, accurate as hell, and (to my mind anyway) is a damn fine looking rifle that can be found at well under £400

Welcome to the forum, a friend of mine was here at the weekend using a Mauser M18 and they are a serious rifle, nice and light and very accurate.

I can't comment on the Tikka but another rifle that might be worth considering is the Howa 1500 in S/S , a very good value top quality rifle in my own opinion.

Best of luck with whatever you plunge for, once you do your homework they're all good rifles.

Welcome from Norfolk . If it was me I’d go for the Tikka - a quality item and they are saleable if you want a change. Get it checked out though for overall condition or ask to confirm it .

I’d also highly recommend emailing ivythorne sporting. I’ve had some good advice from them even when I didn’t buy anything !

thank you for all the responses, I think I will go for a tikka.
I went to Ivythorn sports on the weekend and found them very helpful and knowledgeable they didn’t have a massive collection of .270 but had lots of .243 which could also be a option and keep my eye out for a second hand tikka in .270.
and cheers for all the kind welcomes. I’m based in Oxfordshire

Welcome. .243 is a decent calibre but the .270 is much more versatile, harder hitting and flat shooting. Don't be put of with comment about recoil, a moderated .270 is a pussy cat.

I'm not big or heavily built and I never notice it. Enjoy

Iv just found a tikka M690 .270 that I should be looking at later today.
So next question what moderator would people recommend? I would like a over barrel one to keep it as shot as possible.
cheers for every ones input so far.

Ive had reflex t8, works well but heavy and big. Now ive got dpt, stalon and atec heartz

Out of the lot above I cant really tell them apart on terms of noise reduction nor recoil reduction, this is in part because they are on different calibres and different rifles. However the dpt is the lightest of all and has the smallest overall dimensions. If i had the choice i would probably have 3 dpt moderators

A pal has a tikka m690. It's been a fantastically accurate rifle. He bought it new, it's certainly earned it's keep. I hope you get a good one.
