I have had loads of munties and roe run quite some disstance with h/l shot all dead with my 308 using 170 sp bullets YOU have to except this its not going to make much diffrance what size callibre you use .when i take my shot i have a rough idea what to except If you want to drop them on the spot shoot them in a head .the oiny heart shot deer that have drop stone dead is with the 243 75gr b tips but i didnt like the fact the was no exit and alot of meat damage i found them alittle lite when pushing them past 150yrd iam sure they do kill deer way past that and someone on here has probably shot a rino with them but they are not for me.Just to throw this in to the mix, I was out last night with someone from this forum (chip in if you want to). Whilst looking for larger species, a munty presented itself about 120 yards in a lovely valley. I popped the sticks out and within a couple of seconds, BANG! He's squeezed one off.
The calibre in question was a .260 and whilst this would be an ideal calibre (if what a majority of the contributors to this thread state) for all species of deer, I would have expected it to drop on the spot. This was however not the case. It immediately disappeared into the brambles. There was a large bright red spray at the impact site, indicating a H+L shot but no sign of Munty. After about 20 minutes of searching, we eventually found her about 30 or so yards away and upon inspection of the carcase, it was a very well struck H+L shot.
I'm amazed at how far she got before dropping!

Jesus, 33 pages on wheather a .243 is suitable or not, just get the damn thing and go kill some Deer. Trust me they won't complain because it a .243, I think I've killed more Deer with this calibre (all species) than anything else, it's accurate and has the stopping power.
Why all the fuss...yes there are other calibres just like there are other cars but they all do the job.![]()
yes yes but whilst we are at work between stalking trips why not pursue our second favourite hobby which is telling others there choice of rifle/optics/ammo/calibre/boots/deodorant/pants etc is wrong and our choice is better?
I tried to but just found it borring i justed start falling asleep.basically i'm awesome for using 260 and 308 and anybody that uses a 243 is a big girls blouse !
seriously though it's worth a read , interesting stuff with real world practical information.

Just about to start doing some load development on a good friends 243, he's been using 58gr factory V-Max but has now opted for 75gr heads to reload. It's to be a varmint rifle, not for deer. How well do the 58's group in your rifle?
Sorry for the OT chat.
Cheers.
