To eat it yourself, yes.I went out last night and got me a nice Buck. It was at last light and a Hart and lung shoot and he ran. I could not find it got to dark. So I went back first light and found him straight away . On inspection all was fine so is it still okay to put it to the food chain

Thanks Gary i will skin it today and have a proper lookYou'll probably find that the side it was laying on may have affected the quality of the meat as the heat struggles to escape.
But you really need to skin it to accurately check this.
I wouldn't put it in the food chain but salvage the best bits for personal use.
Regards Gary
I would probably take the back straps and haunch /shoulder off the ground but be more wary of the ones in contact with the ground, esp the shoulder. If it looks and smells ok then fine, but get it chilled and butchered quickly. You'll probably find that the side it was laying on may have affected the quality of the meat as the heat struggles to escape.

The first decent fallow buck I ever shot was lost overnight. By the time I found it the foxes had had a bit of a gnaw at the haunches. I prepped it for home consumption, and not too much more than normal had to be discarded. It tasted fine.Okay i wasn't too sure . I will keep it for me self. Everyday is a school day thank you Bluey
It's been in the chiller from about 8ish and I am going to skin it after lunchI would probably take the back straps and haunch /shoulder off the ground but be more wary of the ones in contact with the ground, esp the shoulder. Well done on finding it, what happened so you couldn't find it? I shot a muntjac a while ago and was crawling in the brambles but that was it's run however it had turned right and was 5 yds along in the even thicker stuff. Found it within a few minutes as I looked along the ditch with the thermal. It's been in the chiller from about 8ish and I am going to skin it after lunch
I thought it had jumped the fence into a gully and that's were i was looking . It was still in the same field that I shot it in. It was 2 yards from the fence just never saw it. I think it might be time to invest in a thermal i would have seen it if I had oneWell done on finding it, what happened so you couldn't find it? Precisely! But give the meat a thorough cooking, none of this nonsense pink in the middle stuff which you get food poisoning fromTo eat it yourself, yes.

Just skind it now and I think it will be dog foodIf ever you dont feel like you will enjoy it and the dealer wont take it , make loads of dog food !
What's the matter with it that's lead you to that conclusion, just out of interest?Just skind it now and I think it will be dog foodunfortunately
You will find a shot deer that runs often falls at an obstacle like a fence, it’s like the effort to cross is enough to tell the body it’s actually dead!I thought it had jumped the fence into a gully and that's were i was looking . The wife she wont touch it. She was a meat inspector in here Day and she said that it's got to go for dog food. Much too my disappointment it seems a wasteWhat's the matter with it that's lead you to that conclusion, just out of interest?

Thermals V a Dog , the dog will win every time . Thermals are good at spotting deer moving or still in cover but less so when they are down behind contours etc etc. no dog ? start looking carefully for paint and pins , track your way in ! It seems to be a fading skill in newer stalkers in this tech centric days.I thought it had jumped the fence into a gully and that's were i was looking .
