Kania 2000 trap and rats

Has anyone used the kania traps successfully with rats? If so what bait did you use? A couple of rats have started eating our chicken pellets from their feeder. I’ve used the pellets as bait in the kania trap but they are not interested, (a month now and nothing in the trap). If anyone can suggest a better bait or give any advice I’d be grateful. Would much rather find a way to get the traps to work than sit out waiting for them with an air rifle, partly because the way they come in and out to the feeder offers hardly any opportunity for a shot.

I would get some Fenn’s down in tunnels instead of the kania. Also look at removing the other food source otherwise they have no reason to risk going into the big metal thing when they can take free chicken pellets! Invest in a treadle feeder for the chooks.

Rats suffer neophobia "may have spelt it wrong", a fear of new things, so may avoid new set traps an stuff for a while.
Get your trap boxes set in well thought places an I generally use peanut butter for bait.

Thanks for the suggestions folks. I’ll try with peanut butter and remove the feeder at night..

I can attest to the fact that rats don’t like new things. Along with the fact it is almost impossible to get them to eat poison bait while there’s food in the troughs.
I worked on a 24,000 bird battery farm years ago. One of my jobs after egg picking and repairs was to kill rats.
The only effective way with poison was when we emptied the cabins and removed most of the old food. You could stuff the rat holes with the sachets of bait but they would dig round it if there were food available elsewhere.
