Keeping a carcass cool in a car

Just for a bit of fun

Date - 1976
Venue - Kariba
Course - Selous Scouts
Course length - 30 days
Day 1 - baboon shot and hung in tree
Day 30 - baboon becomes celebrational meal for those completing the course

Do we get too hung up on 'sell by dates', 'best by' dates and refrigeration temps ??

Some thoughts...

Take the red and green gralloch out at the same time when gralloching even if it is best not to split the ribs or pelvis for hygiene sake. That will help chill it faster. Split chest and pelvis as soon as poss when in hygienic location, this will chill it faster.

If it is going to lie on the hill for any time get it on its back with the cut open.

Chill it as much as you can before you head down the road.

Don't pack them into one box if they still have any heat about them. B&Q fabric plant things are a good cheap option for individual carcass transportation. £2 a go.

Put the air con on cold and keep it there.

I would not cover them I would want to circulate air about them. Ice pack at the cheap end may not have much effect but better than nothing?

Minimise journey time.

Get it on chill as soon as you get back.

As long as you can get the heat down quickly you should be good.

A large plastic, cleanable container of your choice. I use a cheap sinlge fitted bed sheet stetched pulled over it. Frozen, water filled milk bottles in the cavity.

You can get 3 good sized roe,or 2 sika hinds,or 8 mounties into the igloo box
A frozen bottle in each cavity like below helps, but these luckily were in a chiller over night.I have shot a young sika in the Highlands and its kept perfectly fine over a weekend then endured the 8 hour drive home.

Alternatively,if you have space, you can build a ply box and line it with insulation for the plasterers bath. That also worked a treat but it was far too big to move on my own.

I should clarify the above box is the 165qrt Igloo do,I think the biggest.Just in case anyone went out and bought the smaller version.
