Agreed. Horrible things.Old thread now but personally I don't like Opinels, They do have a following and a lot of people like them but I personally can't get away with them.

Please tell me what is so wrong with the Opinel ??Agreed. Horrible things.

I don’t like them - totally subjective, personal opinion. Same as I don’t like pineapple on pizza or tea without milk. Please tell me what is so wrong with the Opinel ??
I tend to shoot rabbits with 22 hornet or 223 as head shots . The only real meat is the saddle and the rear legs anyhow . I have used all sorts from a sub 2" folder to the 5.6003.12 victorinox , would use the rabbit version but my wholesaler doesn't stock them .
I have done a most with my Muntjac model knife, Though i recon the new model " caping knife " might be perfect Rabbiting knife with the G10 Orange handle . Gralloched a Roe buck and a muntjac just this weekend with mine with this far which is a very compact little neck or pocket carry knife. Just need to find a surplus of rabbits some place at present View attachment 363101View attachment 363102
The std high carbon blades hold a good edge but the stainless are poor . if you can handle the staining and rust the HC is the one . The wood handles can seriously swell making the knife hard to open to the point folks will fail , then when they are dry there is a fair risk of them opening up too easy while in your pocket .Agreed. Horrible things.

As to why I don’t like them, I’d say that (1) the locking mechanism fails too easily, and I know several people who’ve been badly hurt; (2) they collect enormous amounts of crap inside and are hard to clean; (3) if the wood gets damp, they can jam and be very hard to open or close; and (4) the blade is too fragile for true multi purpose use.
But I’m perfectly happy to admit that that’s just me, and thousands of people use them and are delighted with them.
Knives are like ice cream: what you like is your choice, and should have no effect at all on my enjoyment of my choice!
I’d forgotten about his knives!Ben Orford makes an excellent knife for rabbit work. I have used mine on Roe too.

nomad looks a nice blade on flat grind

Very nice, good to see there are knife makers out there especially ones that have survived the past few yearsMr Orford's Woodlander opened my wallet back in 2004. It still sees regular outings. Feels great in the hand.
