Just booked myself on a few one day courses, I'm doing farming, motor mechanic, engineer, surgeon and gas fitter, just in case the knife making doesn't work out.
I'll obviously be fully capable of doing all of these after a full 8 to 10 hours of training.
Graham Clarke is your man at Clarke Knives. As regards training 1. He trained as a metallurgist back in the 60s- 70s at Salford Uni 2. He can actually teach and explain why we do what . So many knifemakers are formulaic they do the steps but dont actually understand what is happening or not happening or why .
Most who can do a thing cannot teach a thing , its a different skillset you see . But Grahams thing is training and heat treatment services . Which in short means he is set up to do this , its not just something to do every now and then when slack .
Oh in-case you feel its a future career ? The vast majority pack in after spending and loosing a lot of cash , well there are many reasons why so few make it even a single year .
i am thinking of doing a course i looked at a 3 day course for about £500 i have made 5 or 6 knifes so far using 01 tool steel in my spare time .i am retiring soon and thinking of doing it it for fun and to keep me busy .
