A lot of working dogs used by military, police, rescue services etc are mutts rescued from rescue homes. The trainers are well versed at seeing potential, and to some extent seeing a young adult dog gives you more idea of its temperament that an 8 week old pup.
I can’t help feeling that in the UK far too much is made about the pedigree of the dog, indeed the ones who spend a fortune on the pedigree dogs are the wealthy shots where the dog is almost a fashion accessory that sits on the peg looking pretty.
Whereas the dogs that do the real work - the keeper’s, the beaters and picker ups are often quite an eclectic mix of multiple pedigrees all mixed up in the one dog.
