Just popped into see my mate Steve at Reigate Gunmakers (in Reigate, obvs) and he has just taken delivery of a load of Magtech primers.

Prices as follows:
Small Rifle £70 / 1000
Large Rifle £110 / 1000

I thought that was decent and if you are local saves travel or postage.

He also has a decent selection of Viht powders - 140, 160, 165, N32C.

I am trying to persuade him to take out a seller's account on here :)

Regards

Pretty much any primer works. However different primers have different burn rates / flame temps etc so best practice is to redo a pressure test and work up a new load.

It also very much depends on your own precision / accuracy requirements. Someone who is hunting large deer at sub 200m and is happy with about an inch size group probably wouldn’t notice much difference. The gentleman shooting long range F Class at an international standard where 0.25 MOA is a base level will notice differences between batches of the same make of primers, powder or bullets.

I have mostly used CCI, but I have also used RWS / Geco primers. The latter are much tougher / harder, so you do need a stringer strike. Not an issue for bolt action rifles, but I have noticed this when working up 22 Hornet loads in an old Rook Rifle.

I am currently using Magtech small and large rifle primers due to a lack of alternatives. I used to use CCI.
I have had a (very) few dud Magtech primers - though fortunately none when stalking.
More importantly, they are hotter than the CCIs.
Last month, a large-primer load with RS60 that had been smooth shooting with CCIs turned out to be rather "spicy" when primed with Magtech, proving the principle of working up again when changing primers.
Duly chastened, I did what I should have done in the first place: backed off and worked up again. The final load is 0.5 grains below the original (35.9 Vs 36.4).
