I’m trying to build my own pulley rig for field suspended gralloch’s as cheap as I can so looking for a large stainless gambrel with loop similar to pic for use on Fallow (around 20 inch would be ideal) if anyone has one going?

Thanks
Dan

If it's for field gralloching then you really don't need a big gambrel - if you can't fit the kit you use in your jacket pockets you don't need it! A pair of stainless S hooks will be fine.

My block & tackle consists of some 4mm polypropylene line from a (yatch) chandlers, a couple of pulley blocks to provide mechanical advantage from same chandlers, a couple of spring shackles from toolstation (see other post) & a self locking cleat (Clamcleat cl253 CL253 Trapeze Cleat For 4-8mm (5/32-5/16") Rope | Clamcleat®) from chandlers & S hook(s) - all fit in the poachers pocket in my jacket 👍

I do have a lightweight gambrel in the car but an S hook through the hock is more than up to the job & if you forget the block & tackle at any time you can even get away with using a 3m long piece of rope or even baling twine & an S hook!

Dan I have just put a tape on one I have in the truck it is 12" to the valley of the hooks and a 2" return. Used on fallow and reds for a suspended clean out.
One thing I have made up is a messenger rope from soft blue cord abt 18mm, I wove a loop through a large stainless P clip and it is just the right weight to chuck over the higher tree limb as you will find you lose lots of height with the long legs of the deer + the pully. Been there done that bit lol
As DB said you don't need a big gambrel and tbh the 20" is just to wide...
With folding ones they can jangle also nip your finger (I welded one up to fixed and gave it to a new stalker)

Gents,

Thanks for all the tips & advice - I’ll be leaving it in the vehicle as able to drive up close (mostly) so carrying it not an issue. Just want a simple stainless fixed gambrel but noted maybe not so wide.

Fishboy - looks like a great bit of kit but not for me, thanks.

Tim - I’ll get a messenger rig set up as well 👍🏼

I couldn’t work out how to control the weight once lifted so that cam cleat looks ideal - thanks. Will look to source one. Have you got any pics of your set up in action?

You must have read my mind! - I thought it might be handy so just got some pics after taking the dogs out.

These are some pics of my set up laid out so you can see it clearly & with a tape measure for scale.

Whole outfit with lightweight gambrel

The whole lot uses about 5m of 6mm (not 4mm as I said earlier 🙄) braided line from a chandlers.

The clamcleat is fantastic, it locks up nicely & makes lifting animals very easy.

I don’t just use this rig for suspended gralloching, it gets used to lift fallow into the carrier that fits on the tow socket on the back of the car & will comfortably take the weight of a mature fallow buck.

DB - thanks for taking the time to share that 👍🏼 definately helps me when it comes to put all my bits together, will post on here once complete.

Cheers

No worries, you're welcome.

If I remember next time I've got a beastie on the deck I'll grab some pics of it in use & also some pics of a very basic set up using just a single piece of line & an S hook that can be used to do a suspended gralloch anywhere there's a tree or fence post.

As promised

No pics of the block & tackle in use as this wee thing didn’t really need it…
