Does any one use a running lead when stalking, been using it for new pup after basic training and thinking it could work well, hands free and all!

I use a halti brand waist mounted running style lead, it is ideal ..length allows her extra room to pass rough terrain and had a handle near end if u want to hold tight in ..

Have you seen the stalker’s hands-free lead from @Specialist Gundog Leads ?

I use it when stalking and it’s a great bit of kit.

I use a 30ft length of polyprop webbing about 1” wide and red in colour. It’s attached to her collar and she drags it behind her. She walks reasonably steadily to heel, but she is strong willed, so I just put a foot on it to stop her if needs be. At times I do put a hand on her or hold the lead - especially when on a track.

I do have a long Niggola training harness with multiple clips. Its great for rough shooting put makes too much noise when stalking. They also get tangled in grass, bushes brambles etc.

And on rough ground I don’t like being attached to the hound, especially with a loaded rifle as its far too easy to stumble and have an accident.

And with a pup give yourself a season when you are training the dog first and foremost. If the dog is with you, then it has to take priority and you need to correct the mistakes. This will inevitably result in deer being spooked and you getting cross.

Go with the attitude that you are going for a training stalk. If you shoot a deer that is an absolute bonus. If you have to shoot a deer leave the pup behind, but this is ultimately counter productive as it never gets the experience to learn.

And of course with my hound I never listened to any of the above so end result is far from perfect, but she is wonderful company and her ability to point deer, and find deer more than makes up for her cheekiness.

Good to see others have the same understanding! Thought the reply might be "Train ya dog ta HEEL! LOL
