Least convenient road side dispatch

Was just riding home from work on my motorbike. And saw a young roe buck laying on the floor in a lay by on the opposite side of the road. Spun around and as I pulled in it tried to jump up and run, but was clearly badly injured from an RTC.

Feeling duty bound to end it's suffering I rummaged through my work bag till I found my trusty. But very beat up and blunt gerber multi tool. (No point to the knife either)
I managed to pull it to a safe position a few meters across, and pinned it, then slitting it's throat and severing the windpipe. However there was far more hacking than I'd have liked.

I did my best with the tooling available, and ended it's suffering far quicker than had I not come across it.

But this did get me pondering. If I were to find myself in the same situation again, can anyone reccomend an easy and humane dispatch solution?

I can't routinely carry a proper knife around, and on my motorbike I don't have a tire iron etc to apply blunt force trauma

Cheers

Probably the quickest way would be to go for the carotid artery by sticking your knife through the neck just in front of the spine and cutting outwards, looks like thats what you did but obviously the knife would benefit from being sharp.

You can get some pretty decent, UK legal slip joints.

I've a couple but I always have my TBS Boar on me or in the car. Legal in length and super sharp. You don't need a reason to carry it and the slip joint is stiff enough to not do yourself a mischief when using it.

It'd be my go to for any deer work if I had to use a UK legal knife.

I think what will work depends a lot on how ‘alive’ the deer still is, and what will work for a roe deer may not work for the bigger species.

I think any multi tool or Swiss Army knife type knife would work, if the blade was sharp and the deer wasn’t thrashing about too much.

But I’d be unhappy trying to use a non locking blade on a larger deer or one that was still struggling a lot.

What does the law say about keeping a fixed blade in a vehicle ‘in case’?

It is a tricky one. Do you have a 'reasonable excuse'?

Full disclosure.

I do keep a fixed blade in the truck (it is in the gralloch tray). I am content to 'argue' my case if required to do so, to any passing Sheriff who is minded to ask me.

I drive a Landrover. I look like I drive a Landrover. The Landrover is (and looks like) a Gamekeeper's truck.

If I was driving a 'boy racer' hatchback, and had the knife tucked down the side of the car door next to my rizzla papers...

...maybe not so much.

I doubt very much that "just in case" would constitute "good reason". If to/from work (if work requires that sort of thing), or to/from a shoot then you'd be fine but have it in your boot when you've just come out of Tesco's and they'd have you.

Indeed, the police around here are well aware of different ways of life, it's not Birmingham city centre.

Yes, full disclosure - a standard stalking knife lives in my truck. But exactly as you say, it looks the part and as a mild mannered somewhat nerdy looking academic with a front seat littered with wildflower guides, I think The Authorities are unlikely to regard me as their target audience.

If you have nothing with you, and this may be frowned upon but you could go the old Maasai way if the deer is smaller and it's seems a kinder way to go in the situation.

Kneel on the chest, kneel on the windpipe, cover the nose and mouth with both hands.

My main stalking knife lives in my ammunition safe, but I have a backup swingblade buried in the depths of my shooting box. That shooting box goes in/out the back of the truck depending on the day I've got on. In there is also thermal, binoculars, first aid etc.

Tomorrow I'm off to look at a new permission, so it'll be in the truck despite me not actually shooting.

The fact that the law can't differentiate between us and a machete wielding drug dealer, is nonsense.

Anyway, here's my UK legal TBS. Really strong detent when open. A proper working knife.

I have one of those. Really very capable little knife. Though, as with all the TBS knives, I find the handle a little too ‘round’. They have a very distinctive in house style!

The law does differentiate.

You (may) have a reasonable excuse.

A machete wielding drug dealer, will not.

It really is nothing to worry about - unless of course you are a machete wielding dealing drug dealer...

Reasonable excuse is down to opinion though. Get the wrong officer and judge, and you and the machete wielder are no different

Absolutely your excuse has to be 'reasonable'.

I am content that I have nothing to fear, and that even the 'wrong' officer and (God forbid) 'wrong' Judge, can differentiate between the two...

This lovely local chap was ****ed up in the daytime, shouting, swearing and waving a sword in the street.

I have the video somewhere.

4 month suspended sentence....

So legitimately having a fixed blade or a locker in your truck/car/van toolkit isn't out of the realms of possibility.
