Least convenient road side dispatch

So if travelling by car, and you had a small toolbox in the boot, wouldn't a fixed blade knife just sit nicely alongside the other tools as part of the versatile assortment required for various tasks, including vehicle breakdown?

Even an old x4 D cell (or greater) Maglite torch does more than shine light.

One of the officer cadets from St Andrews whilst I was with Edinburgh...

Can't mind what the sentence was (and in between things at work do can't see if the article actually says).

"An officer had to batter him four times with a baton to get him to drop the weapon." Hahahahaha

"McGregor to carry out 140 hours of unpaid work on a community payback order, and pay £400 compensation to his victim."

How is it that I’m happy to shoot a deer and butcher it but having to dispatch one upset me for a whole day?

Returning from a nightshift last year came across a young buck that had been belted on the other side of the road.
As I passed I saw it move, bu**er and about turned.
Parked up with hazards on and dragged the poor sod to the verge.
Luckily as I was returning from work had a knife for cutting ropes in the kit bag.
It had been badly hit and could see damage to its side and some blood from its mouth.
Pulled its head back and carried out the coup de gras.

But boy was I upset when I got home 30min late.
Normally I go for a few hours kip after a nightshift but that morning I couldn’t.😢

"Stand and Deliver!"

Can't mind what he's up to nowadays, but I want to say he's definitely still in the reserves... Although don't think they let him go to Sandhurst...

Reasonable excuse is down to opinion though. Get the wrong officer and judge, and you and the machete wielder are no different
I doubt the CPS (Crown Prosecution Service ) would be willing to charge anyone giving the circumstances. I would advise, if a person is arrested as a result of an incident as described, and offered a caution to refuse that offer and force the CPS to consider whether it is in the Public interest to prosecute the case, and or is it likely to result in a successful prosecution, I think NOT!!. Remember that a caution has to be declared when applying, or renewing your tickets

Hi vis jacket and a clipboard.

Gets you anywhere.
This is absolutely true ^^^
I put it to the test last summer. Got into a major event simply by donning high-vis jacket and waving cheerfully as I drove past gate security without stopping.

(And yes, I did have my knife, a Buck 110, on my belt as usual).

No way might I dispatch at roadside with a knife without authorisation, with the general public watching on the proceedings . Already the RSPCA have stated they would seek a prosecution for using a knife in this manner, remember if you end up in court getting a sympathetic jury of the general public in the larger towns would be low . Without permission to follow a wounded deer onto another persons ground without owner consent either

I think you worry too much.

I highly recommend you talk that through very carefully with a good legally trained person before risking a trial, if you are ever in such a situation. "Not in the public interest " is a big question mark . I do side with you that the CPS likely wont go for it , its just the stakes are high , it is possible to keep your FAC with a caution on record

Having recently been dragged along for 4 years of road accident investigation (CPS prosecuting a driver for death by careless - me on the side of the deceased), only for it to get to court day and the judge to laugh at the CPS for wasting their time and throw the whole thing out in 7 minutes... I wouldn't want to risk it

Hardly surprising. When you shoot a deer there is very little stress involved. Deer is probably grazing away unfazed and doesn’t know a thing about it. You have also chosen the deer, its part a planned cull and the meat won’t be wasted.

A young deer that has been hit by a car which you then have to dispatch by hand is another matter entirely. It is stressed, you can see it in its eye and and you are up close and personal. And it’s a waste as the carcass usually won’t be worth keeping as there will be internal organ damage and lots of bruising.

Was in a daylight RTA, other half driving with care, fallow doe ran out and we hit it. Totally unavoidable. Both got out, car written off, deer flailing and trying to get up, broken leg (s?) so I used the Opinal knife I'd bought not 10 minutes before to cut it's throat and moved it from the road. Never even thought about it and on reflection would have been more than prepared to explain my actions to a judge and jury in preventing suffering. I am sure I was not wrong.

Just having a bit of lunch after moving a few bales around in one of the farm telehandlers. I glanced down at one point, as I was driving along a highway, to see an 8-10" kitchen knife on the floor of the cab. Clearly someone had mislaid the folder that usually stays in there for opening round bales. Not sure if carving knife + round bales = good reason??

weird on the face of it , though yeah without that there is no passion in the stalking of deer . Those who are seriously into the stalking long term all feel likewise

Jesus Christ! You guys worry too much about keeping knives in your cars.
Why would anyone not keep a knife as part of their car tool kit ?

Because there is every chance you wont have good reason in case you get stopped , it happens ! Even though i am going to be a tough one to prosecute through my work , i dont carry or transport "without good reason"( used to but things have really changed now ) . I got stopped and searched , PNC checked just for driving in and straight out of a petrol station a few years back . Just two regular middle aged blokes , the copper thought that i was avoiding him but like i said i was correcting missing my junction doing a U turn
I really dont need the hassle of having anything more than the Swiss army knife on my key change - Unless i am off stalking etc , i which case i would have firearms anyhow .
Times have changed - totally changed !

I alway carry a captive bolt works just fine on a passive deer...not a firearm...nor is it a bladed article gets you out of the" good excuse" arena ..know its limititations and be competent, also you can bleed the deer out but that is for abbatoirs..captive bolt into the occipital junction will always kill.. not stun.22 blanks for small deer.38 blanks for larger deer

I had one the same just a fortnight ago
no knife with me so I just ran over its head .
Quicker and put the deer out of its suffering . Then dragged it in to the hedge no point ****ing about when you have to do the right thing .
