Like fek! Our leaders got as much backbone as a jellyfish, tell them keep theirs & we'll keep ours!! Then they can buy the fushy goods s from us instead if landing our fish in our ports then driving it straight over to France!!Interesting situation - French and to a lesser extent German fears of successes outside the EU have led to the EU demanding 80% of UK fishing rights IN PERPETUITY and the supremacy of EU law over here. I have to say I am incensed at the shameful way they are behaving and hope we all refuse to but goods from either country. Impossible to agree with their demands so time to say goodbye and never ever darken our doors again. So much for those who sought to set Europe free. I would swear at this point but add your own if you feel inclined.
Those who think a no deal with europe won't cost UK business...
Asset strip the carcass, you mean.America saud it would back us
My, my, are extremely touchy today. Academia bothers me not we all had to work hard for our degree or doctorate. Some of us chose varied paths via different spheres but we all get to the same place in the end. You would be extremely surprised at my achievements and choices I made. You don't know a thing about me other than that I am an academic - which appears to bother you enormously. I have never had a particularly easy life, I have worked extremely hard to have what I do (even if you may not recognise it as work), and I am certainly not someone who has ever (even when I was a student) been much interested in partying.
Too good for too long? So am I right in interpreting what you seem to be implying here: my generation and those younger than me will be the first since WWII who will be worse off than their parents generation. And this is somehow something to be approved of? Somehow we deserve this? Because we were born into a world of economic ease, we somehow deserve to suffer a bit?
You appear to explicitly acknowledge that we are all about to be worse off. And appear to think this is a good thing. I am mystified as to why.
Which house? My house sale completes on Monday next and the pound/Euro exchange rate is dropping like a stone. I don't want any sympathy but these are the harsh realities of the Brexit fiasco for some of us.

Economic ease will definitely be a thing of the past shortly and you (not me I'm too old) will live to see your way of life become less easy, due to overpopulation among many other things, so it would be better if you accept a gradual decline.
Don't be mystified just look at reality and accept it. Anyway Nicola will get you back in the EU but at what cost?![]()
Now you're getting it. Slowly but you're getting it.So let me get this straight: because we are approaching an inevitable Malthusian crunch that will cause a deterioration in global living standards, a No Deal Brexit that accelerates that deterioration for the inhabitants of the UK is to be desired?
That's like saying: winter is coming, it's about to get cold. So I am going to leave the house and go sit in a tent.
Am I right in understanding then that the one reason you are giving here to welcome a No Deal Brexit is that it will harden us to the bad times to come?
My god that's bleak. I would love to have seen that on a side of a bus in 2016: Vote Leave! Toughen up for the Apocalypse, you pansies...
The reason why we tax imported cars is so that we can a) encourage consumers to by locally produced cars and b) so that the treasury can get some of the value out of it.Agreed, but why do we have to tax all imported cars to the same extent as EU cars, can we not pick and choose what we do if we are a sovereign nation.
Only if it's in their favor to do so, like we buy their chlorinated chicken or else they'll close the trade door. Everyone looks out for themselves that's why in business terms it would pay to be a member of the United States of Europe. Obviously that has its downsides tooAmerica saud it would back us
There is little doubt that a no deal scenario will cost us dearly
It is a shame that we find ourselves in such a position
I can only hope that we can create new markets and new products in the medium future
I would still vote to remove ourselves from EU control
Am I right?
I don't know - but I can't help but feel that we are in this position because of EU protectionism
And ever since the Navigation Act of 1661 protectionism has served neither industry nor country well in long term
Im going to hazard a guess that you voted remainA huge number of jobs and businesses have already left, or been created elsewhere because of this. And many many more will go.
it has feck all to do with post WW2 etc, but everything to do with today and the future. More than 50% of the UK population has had huge freedoms of movement, choice of travel, work and study denied them. Four years ago any of our kids could have chosen to go and live, work or study anywhere from the Arctic circle to South of Spain. That is a huge freedom.
But those who voted for BREXIT based on a pack of lies fed to them by Farage, Cummings and Boris have taken away that freedom.
And the really funny thing is that you are stuck with us because you took away our freedom to leave.
...aaand youre pretty sore about all this ?My question regarding cars was why we in future couldn't put a higher import tax on European cars rather than other imports. Thanks for your breadth of knowledge regarding the single market imports. The reason why we tax imported cars is so that we can a) encourage consumers to by locally produced cars and b) so that the treasury can get some of the value out of it.
Let me explain - take a £30,000 price on a new pickup.
if this was produced locally then the £30,000 price would go to the dealer, the manufacturer, the people who built it, and the local supply chain. All the money would remain within the economy, either in the pocket of all the workers in the supply chain, the country and the treasury via taxes on the employees and the companies. If the manufacturers are foreign owned they can only remit post tax profits back to their home country.
If you import the same car the wholesale price to the dealer will be say £25,000, so of the total £30,000 purchase only £5,000 will remain in the economy. The remaining £25,000 will go overseas to the manufacturing economy and there it will remain. Chances are the import price will have to be paid in a foreign currency that will need to be earned by making exports.
Within the EU, it is a single market with freedom of movement of peoples and expenditure. So very easy for a german or japanese car maker to set up a factory in UK employing lots of people making cars that can easily be sold right around Europe. Even if the car was made in the Czech republic - yes some of the purchase price would go to Czech people, but they would be free to spend that money in the UK and via their taxes will support EU funded projects within the UK.
Capital is totally mobile and will follow wherever it is most economic to produce stuff. One thing that business really doesn’t like is political uncertainty.

There's a wall of money buying up property in rural Scotland too, with quite a sizeable part of it from the continent.I note with some interest that whilst property prices sur le continent are falling maybe because we arent propping up the euro with other net contributers (few), our domestic house prices are going through the roof.
I'd rather win independence from Europe and miss out on certain things. I can stand life without a BMW in favour of a Toyota any day of the week. In case others hadnt noticed we now have no car industry.
I am not concerned with riots in France anymore - let them try it on the fishing grounds - they are going to lose.
Not only house prices , second hand car values are very high too.I note with some interest that whilst property prices sur le continent are falling maybe because we arent propping up the euro with other net contributers (few), our domestic house prices are going through the roof.
My 2002 bought German house was 140K euros then, now it is worth around 400K euros so they are healthy in my area.I note with some interest that whilst property prices sur le continent are falling maybe because we arent propping up the euro with other net contributers (few), our domestic house prices are going through the roof.
