Legalities of shooting at sea

I am uncertain of the Law in NI, but in England, Scotland and wales it is Illegal to shoot anything alive from a motor vessel full stop.
I used to have to jump through serious hoops to get a licence!
Wrong. You can shoot from a boat with an engine as long as its not running. The river Tay is like the Wild West on the 1st of September

Possibly been done off an accommodation rig at one time but I very much doubt an oil rig slider.

I can't see it happening at all. Who'd sign that off, there is no way Rig HSE would pass it! Could you imagine the beach reading the STOP cards for the day.. One near miss with a No'7 cartridge, it's fine though but the marker light was damaged. I think his mate is on a wind up or has watched Armageddon too many times.

Apologies for resurrecting an old thread, but does anyone have a link to the legislation that prohibits shooting from a motor boat whilst at sea but within territorial waters?

It is Illegal in the UK to shoot from a motor vessel, although you could get licenses under certain circumstances to shoot from them, eg seals, cormorant on rock etc, but it is doubtful any would be issued today.
You have always been able to shoot from a rowing boat, hence the use of punt guns for wildfowl.
You can actually shoot from a motor boat if the motor is off. I have been wildfowling in my lobster boat and so long as it moored in an Esturary not moving it totally legal

wow this is resurrecting an old thread. the OP asked about shooting from a boat at sea not a river estuary. Part of my living in the early 80s was the destruction of cormorants, gulls and seals at sea and i needed special licences to shoot within 3 miles of the shore.

I am always amazed that people who hunt shoot and fish do not study the matter in detail, instead choosing to ask other who most often know little more than the asker!
perhaps spending some money from the pot that seems endless when it come to gear might be in order, just a few pounds invested on a copy of

Fair Game: The Law of Country Sports And the Protection of Wildlife.

would answer all questions.

in fairness I think people answering re wildfowling are answering at cross purposes as the thread has taken a tangent. Your first post.

Is incorrect. It is not illegal to shoot anything alive from a motor vessel at all.

Here is the legislation governing the activity...

And I found some guidance in the BASC website that puts it in simpler terms.

You can shoot wildfowl from a motor boat perfectly legally in the UK. You cannot use the engine in direct pursuit of the wildfowl.

I.e. If the boat is stationary and the engine is off, or if the boat is at anchor, pushed into a dry creek etc etc. You are acting legally.

Perhaps you ought to study the matter in more detail before posting on a subject that you know less than the asker?

You can shoot seals from a boat if you comply with certain conditions and have a SCQF Leval 6 seal management certificate possibly only in Scotland our SNP Government are the only people in the world that could come up such an arrangement
