If you turned up with a leupold i would offer you the use of my equipment, and suggest your chances would be better if you took me up on the offer. If you turned up with a niko id ask if the rifle was a .177 or a .22

You crack me up sometimes. Do you not remember your "pipe dream" rifle?
1) Action – straight pull, left or right hand
2) Barrels – interchangeable, various calibres/lengths/screwcut to suit use
3) Trigger – crisp and factory set
4) Stock - plastic or wood.
5) even more interesting Riflesmith! –build your own all day long.
6) oh and finally optics/rings. – QD mounts with S&B 8X56 for general stalking, leupold 6.5 – 20 x 50 fine duplex for varmints/neck shot culling/target shooting

I am lucky enough to have four Zeiss scopes but have recently bought a Leupold for shooting pigs later this year, and I've shot plenty of deer using rifles with Leupold scopes in the past. The deer never seemed to notice that the Leupold was any "less" of a scope.
So far as magnification, a 6x42 served me very well for my first 10 years stalking, both Southern woodland and on the Hill.
