I remember my mate and I buying one every year for years.

yep. I probably had them for 15+ years

It had a secondary use. The police could charge poaching charge and a charge of taking game without said licence.

I don't think many shooters bothered with game licences. As a cop in a rural force, I don't ever remember anyone being prosecuted for not having one.

I'm sure I remember paying something like 38.5p or something like it for a dog licence.

Yep remember them.

Also remember the village bobby being chuffed to bits with the woodcock he shot on a beaters day... on 1 February - not that we rinsed him about it at every opportunity after, not much anyway
