Live Edge Shields

I'm really debating going from full skull too long nose cuts, after this upcoming buck season I will honestly have no shelf spacing anywhere.

I think in the wood working scene these are usually considered live edge right? Has anyone done these and If so what too do? I'm not the most experienced in terms of wood I would assume harvest a suitable branch and leave it somewhere too season? then slice once dried, and depending on the wood oil.

It seems like a significantly more economic way too produce shields for roe, any woods that are no-no?
Birch seems nice but logistically very unlikely too be able too get any, probably more likely too be larch/ash/oak or perhaps hazel (I doubt though, very busy and I'm not going too purposely cut limbs off random trees)

Lot of larch dying from die-off, probably most likely species?
