....this was at the back of my mind - I was looking to implement it with vulnerable children and young adults in a Local Authority a while back - but the basis is I think what you are after....

Might be worth a look?

But again, these would all appear to need connection to a mobile network to function... the OP needs something for when he is out of cell phone coverage... the only units that are capable of that are satelite based systems so PLBs and Spot are, as far as I'm aware, the only things that will work!

After a little more digging i think i will go for a PLB.I am getting a price for the fastfind 210 and the new fastfind ranger. As vipa says it will have to be a satelite based unit. The fastfind unit has no subscription and the battery lasts five years,a one use unit, but as long as you can activate it you will be found.not to be used for a sprained ankle i think, but pease of mind counts for a lot nowadays.

Good call Glen...

Whilst you should never rely on technology to get you out of trouble.... proper planning and training is key... you will be amazed at how much safer that little box in your backpack will make you feel! Any issues registering it with HM Coastguard when you get it give me a shout... I've been through the pain  typical UK gov't department with the usual non-sensical processes to boot!
