Long barrelled pistols

I ended up speaking to my old pistolsmith a year or so back and the topic of long barrelled pistols came up during a collective outpouring of frustration at the ban. I am pretty sure (but not certain) that he spoke highly of the Alpha revolvers if I recall correctly as being good quality. I think he was using one himself with good results. His website is The Coach House | Gunsmith gun repairs, firearm repair, shotgun refurbishment and it may be worth having a chat about options as he had some stock in hand. If you have deep pockets then I see Korth do some LBPs that are lovely
I have a friend who has one of his Alpha's it has had a fair bit of work done to it,perhaps not quite as much as his own one.
And he is still more than a decent shot.

Great, thanks for confirming it was the Alpha and that my brain has not entirely shrivelled up!! Stuart did an absolutely first class job on my old pistols back in the day and he was definitely " a bit above average" with a pistol himself!! (Spoiler for those who cant detect sarcasm...he was an absolutely incredible pistol shot!!). He did a great conversion for double action revolvers where he fitted a ball detent behind the trigger to induce a slight increase in pressure immediately before the sear tripped with the result of giving double action speed with single action accuracy.

I have a Grand Power K22 but as other have said, it‘s no compensation to having lost the ability to shoot Service Pistol :banghead:

On a good day, it’s quite fun but it’s only plinking though :coat:

Sounds like not much has changed over the years,it still works very well however.

Thanks for the replies lads, appreciate it!

I’ve done proper pistols before in Poland (was awesome) and in the military so I’m semi familiar with it, just looking to get into it a bit without needing to buy a plane ticket each time!

Totally agree the pistol ban was ridiculous, politically motivated and achieved the square root of eff all.

Might be worth a dabble by the sounds of it, albeit I’m not going to be starting a collection up! Suspect it’ll be a one and done - might get a .357/.38 revolver so I can mix and match with a lever action for gallery rifle and still keep reloading and ammo costs sensible.

Thanks for the replies!

I have a GSG 1911 LBP and Taurus 66 LBR in .357.

I prefer the Taurus by a country mile and it shoots way better than the GSG. Like you I have a .357 lever action, one word of advice though get a full auto reloading press as you will smash through the rounds!!

Give it a go whats the worse that can happen.. yes not the same..but still loads of fun and thats what its all about...
What you can do with it might depend on what your club set up is like..25m is a push but if you have small bays, reactive targets or poppers your in for a fantastic laugh!
I've got a gsg firefly cheap entry semi gun..but goes bang and super reliable with the right ammo. And a Taurus .357, looks like some thing the joker woukd have in Batman but it puts a big smile on my face and is good out to 50m. Hoping to get some Ukpsa lbr matches in this year...

Do it!!

Please excuse my ignorance on this , but , can long barrel pistols only be shot at a club ? , or can they be used on your shooting land ?.
I've had nothing to do with pistol shooting since the ban , so I've no idea of what can and can't be done.

That's the frustrating thing mate, they make them so the fall in the legal banding of a long arm, that you can hunt with but they stop you hunting with these.

Love my LBP’s! I have a GSG 1911 that I bought new and tricked out with M9 engineering parts to be able to enter competitions - absolutely love shooting it and plinking - it’s such a stupid way to have to go to get round a rule on a technicality and anyone with half a brain knows that a criminal would be out with a saw/grinder in two mins and that it was just a way of pandering to the masses but don’t let that put you off - they are great fun.

Best of luck with your pistola!

Regards,
Gixer
Criminals won’t bother with a LBP as there are plenty of illegal pistols already out there. The ban only affected the law abiding.

“For semi autos it is a bit more limited being .22 only.”.
That is a surprise so can I just check - did the ban extend to semi auto c/f pistols even though they would have satisfied the other “long” criteria?

Back in the day after when the ban was announced I took my 1911 that I had built from scratch up on an Essex frame with a Gold Cup slide when I was in the USA working, back to the USA on a trip to see my pal in SC and sold it on to a dealer there as the thought of it being melted down was just not going to happen $450 was what I got for it. Then Bliar (yes) got in and he went the whole hog on .22lrs as well so I took my Unique Des69 with me on a contract job to Sweden in Stockholm but the dealers there would not take it as it was not on Swedish paperwork so off I flew to SC again from Sweden and sold it to the same dealer for? $450.
That's basically what made me decide to leave the UK.
