Long (unlucky) crow

I had to feed up at the the shoot and chose today (dodging the rain) and thought I would also check out my new loads as well. I took the old 30-06 with me, and went to my zero site and set up a target. My 110gr V-MAX did very well, then I tried my 125gr Nosler. I got an even tighter group with these, and just needed two clicks up to be smack on at 100 yards. Lovely. I set off to the woods a bit later on and when I was going down the farm track a crow sauntered over the hedge and landed in the field next to me. He was about a hundred yards out and, well, it would be rude not to ! I lent over the back and got the rifle out of the case. The crow did not like this and took off, but flew slowly and alighted about 200 yards from me. I got the rifle loaded and dropped the passenger window to get ready. The crow did not like this either and took off again, but still flew slowly and set down again 300 yards from me.

The crow thought he was out of range and settled in to feed. I put an old towel on the top of the door to rest the gun on. I adjusted the parallax, wound the magnification up and focused the scope. I had a nice clear sight picture, so I lined him up. I waited for him to stand up after he had finished feeding, and held a crow's height above him. I thought this was about 10 inches, which I thought would be right for the bullet drop. I squeezed the round off gently, and it nailed him. It went whoosh, pause, thump. I hit him dead center, and he expanded quite a bit all over the field around him. Feathers went up and then feathers came down. I suppose really it was not fair, its a lot of bullet for a crow. But, my oh my, I really really liked it.

I once was zeroing a new scope on my .223 at night on a rarely used permission with a good hillock. A fox ran across behind my target but in front of the backstop hill. I squeaked her in and confirmed zero with a nice chest shot. Gravid vixen. I have a picture, very unfortunate fox.

Reminds me of a morning when a couple of magpies dropped on a fallow I'd shot & started pecking away. The results of a 150gn Nosler BT dead centre on a magpie are quite impressive!
