A Stalker for the Highlands used a trick a couple of times, when his dog went AWOL (oft times overnight).

He lay his own coat on the ground where we were last, and in the morning the dog would be found curled up on it.
I believe he left a coat for the dog

Have done it with terriers stuck in fox earths- once they loose a bit of weight they can sometimes free themselves. Will wait on coat for you to come back 👍.

i used the same trick when i was younger ,if i lost a ferret down the hole i would leave its box overnight with my hat or jumper in, always happy to see me in the morning

I lost a GWP early morning on a roe a few years ago when I culled two roe deer and didn't see the 3rd laid up in pre-thicket sitka. Dog found the dead deer and I started to gralloch them both but took my eye off my bitch, she put the 3rd up and wouldn't come back to the call so after looking for a hour or so I left my coat near the gralloch and left my van on the forest track nearby with the back doors open. I came back for the evening stalk to the same area and looked for deer and dog in the thermal. When it stated to get dark I returned to the van to find the dog curled up in the back looking very guilty.

My current GWP's are well trained and obedient, however, one in particular has great drive when needed so I use the Garmin on him just in case.

Back when I had my first GWP I also had a 9-5 job so by October I was walking her in the dark. While not gunshy, she was scared stiff of fireworks, and given that firework season now starts at Halloween and ends with Chinese new year/ random birthdays/May balls, it was nigh on impossible to get her exercised. One firework going off and she would vanish. I might not even hear it myself. But she was a smart dog, and I soon learnt the drill, I’d phone home and she’d be at the front door waiting to be let in. Thank god there were no significant roads between our usual walk and home but it was always a bit stressful

GWPs et al going off on the own recognisance is a bit of a theme and I am currently saving for a gps collar. My latest GWP has amazing recall, but is very far ranging and easily goes out of sight in woodland It will be good to have the reassurance that she is coming back.
