If you want super slick, get an action with a full body bolt, like a Steyr SBS, Sauer, or Sigarms SHR 970.

If you want slick in a different way, and a real hunting rifle, just buy a CZ 550 Safari in .300 WM and be done with it for little money. It not too light, but not heavy, shorter barrel than most 300s, iron sights, American or German style stock.

Another classic is an older Sako L61R, AIII or AV. Lots of aftermarket stocks in all grades of wood. Very smooth.

I believe what you are looking for is the surgeon magnum action. quite honestly, 'that' is what you are wanting. only question is, budget you have for it.

The Borden actions are really nice. Not cheap, of course. And a lot of Remington accessories fit them.

If you don't care how out of the mainstream you are, the 7mm SAUM in a lighter shorter rifle is probably as good a hill and mountain rifle as you could build....best of the short magnums. I still regret passing over a Remington Model 7 laminate with 22-inch barrel and iron sights in 7mm SAUM for $400.00.

Lots of good advise above. As an alternative, you can sleeve a bolt on a factory action such as a Remington, Winchester or Sako - that will make it less sloppy and if you have things trued up at the same time you have a good platform.

If you want a CRF action that is not sloppy then having this done to a Winchester is perhaps your best bet; otherwise buying something expensive like a Mayfair Engineering M98 or a CorBon M1 or Harre M49 (if you can persuade them to make you one) is about it. An alternative non-claw extractor CRF would be the Ed Brown (no longer made, but you might find a rifle to rebarrel) or McMillan G30.

If you want a non-CRF custom action then look at either a Borden Rimrock LSR, BAT HR or Borden Timberline.

Something for all budgets in that little lot...

Surgeon actions do not have the tight tolerances that say a BAT action has, the bolt is very sloppy when not locked up, they are designed to tolerate the crud factor. Perfect for a hunting or tactical rifle but not ideal for a target one.
