Concern for this issue assumes that the person cares. Pretty obvious this is just a vermin control, wang away at anything brown, doesn't really matter if you hit, miss or wound situation. It's a sad read to be honest.
 
Please Sir "Please Sir " is it ? The cartridge demonstrated high performance at the time of its introduction and was marketed as being suitable for big game shooting in the 270 to 460 metres (300 to 500 yd) range, when that was considered long range hunting. With modern bullets and optics, it is easily a 1,000 yard cartridge.

It's a toughie.

That range is far further than I'd feel comfortable shooting a deer at - because I personally feel the chance of a non-fatal impact is so much greater. Whereas with a fox, I feel you're far more likely to get a binary outcome - hit and catastrophic wound leading to rapid death, or outright miss. So I feel comfortable, in good conditions, dropping a fox out to 300m or so (my longest fox shot I lasered out at 286m). A deer, on the other hand, I'd really not be happy taking anything other than a 'standard' heart/lung shot at more than 200m or so

But if you're comfortable and competent with those sorts of distances, far be it for me to say it's wrong

Arguably here is the issue in regards to BC over velocity ,

A .270 100gr flying at 3000fps (normally around 3100fps although mine shoots at 2954 fps with and SD of 9) is more likely to go through soft tissue and do less damage at 100yrds than what it is kat 300yrds , as the bullet slows down the more it will be likely to fragment or expand a faster bullet wont expand qucik enough hence the design of ballistic tips etc .
 
Wonder if this post would have been different if I found the bullet remains in the pluck cavity instead of being honest and putting in the lower vertebrae?

I put my post on Instagram and forgot to untick the box for it to auto post to my Facebook page then it gets posted by another member on here. Just goes to show .

Completely agree, well said. Unless your an anti, shoot a blaser or worst, use a 270...

I've literally changed all my settings now for fb, too much of a pain! My Instagram (the few times i use it, mainly for half naked females...) has it on so no one except friends can see posts. Maybe worth changing too and having a cull whilst your at it. For what its worth, the bullet expanded great

For a neck shot you want a bullet to open up fast and dump as much energy as possible ASAP. I was a bit surprised though at just how much your slug had opened and flattened at that distance, I honestly don't know whether I'm impressed or not , I'd have expected a classic mushroom. You sure it's a 100grainer and only going that fast? I can do that easy with 140s in a 270.
Tulloch you really gave the hornets nest a rattling good kick there, both the " never take a neck shot" and the " never take a long shot" brigades are having a field day, more power to them.
Guys, if you don't want to take a long shot don't do it, if you won't take a neck shot that's fine too, just move over a bit and I'll take him from here.
It's just a difference of opinion, lots of them around, stay safe, keep calm and pray the lockdown ends while some of us are still sane enough to be let out alone.

Hey I am an open book , I am open to scrutiny I have no issue on that front to be honest. I never created this post and noone knew the context it was blindly put on here looking to police something without knowing the fact .

I agree on much that I have read , I am NOT advocating those types of shots are not suitable for most conditions and what I was doing is NOT stalking and to add I never claimed it was, I am being policed for something that I started in regards to bullet retention.

Now to another point, I have no issue with my decision as the outcome was good, it was my responsibility and if the shot was wrong it would have been my responsibility to clean it up, like I have done for many a guest in the past as other guides, stalkers and keepers have had to do. Mistakes happen and that is part of the business, in the end it is not the mistake that should be judged it is how you deal with it that needs the judging.

I put myself out there on social media and that is my choice , there is stuff that goes on that I do not agree with but likewise there is people that don't agree with me, I am ok with this and it is something I can live with.

The shot was legal, it was calculated, I dialed to 6.5 MOA on a perfectly capable scope with a rifle that has been chronoed and zero checked once a week, it shoots sub quarter MOA at 100yrds (hence why I range in yards not meters) so I know where the limits are. How many on here and elsewhere can say the same, I bet many if you chrono'd their load would be shooting far faster or slower than what they expect some even shooting illegally and not realising. There is a lot of work goes into my shooting.

sorry mate it was 130gr , miss typed, I use 130gr Prohunter, after the recovery it was 108gr of bullet left. I was very impressed on its retention I was expecting more of a slow mushroom like you explain but it did not just splinter and lose 22gr but it fully expanded and folded upon itself , Actually what I was trying to illustrate in my Instagram post. My OP was never boasting about the distance of the shot it was about the bullet, and to add Prohunter is the cheapest hunting round that Sierra makes and it performs amazingly.

I have read this entire thread and fair play to you saying it was you. You are clearly a good marksman and know your kit and what you are doing, I can happily say that you are a better shot than I am but I am always working to get better at any type of shooting with a rifle so I can be more confident and competent while out in the field. It is the responsibility of the person pulling the trigger to decide whether or not the shot is within their capability and there are so many factors involved for each individual shot I dont see how anyone can weigh in and attack someone for something that they don't know all the facts about. I have shot for long enough to know my own limits and will stick to them until I feel comfortable to do something different when I feel ready. I have noticed some members on here are somewhat hypocritical in making comments about not judging others when they were perfectly happy to judge me when I posted the results of trying something new to me and I was only shooting targets. I won't go any further and I won't judge anyone on their decisions, I have seen good and bad shooting in my time, it's not for us to judge.

Wasn't questioning your rifle only the range, it doesn't worry me what you shoot at whatever range and was only concerned for the Newbies reading such a thread thinking it was ok to take shots without knowing the possible outcome of such a shot, Like you said bad choice of wording.
