The big advantage of a smart phone is that you can set it up to upload your pics to the cloud so you don't lose them. The disadvantages are that they are difficult to use in bright sunlight and no good for long distance shots.
Which "real camera" depends on your budget and your experience of using a decent DSLR for instance. If you can afford it a mirrorless camera with a superzoom would be a good option.
I took my Panasonic point and shoot camera because of the optical and digital zoom great when the phone is out of its depth yet small and slips in your pocket.
Take both. A decent DSLR will give you really good photos. If you take a spotting scope - and its a nice to have with you, take a phone-scope adapter so you that take photos and watch birds and animals at water holes etc.
