Rob at Monarch has good merino buffs right now, I bagged a couple the other day ,and have been cosy out here most of the day (-9 to -12°); don’t make the mistake of buying only one, it’s nearly Christmas, so make them an early present to keep you cosy!
Natural fibre socks work well but don’t forget to wash your feet in the first instance, this is the first step
to having warm feet.
Good boots make a difference, when it’s really cold here (-20’s) or when waiting out for a few hours the Canadian Sorel boots with felt inner boots get another airing, otherwise when it’s an active day and not too bad cold (like today), the Hanwag Yukons are plenty warm enough.

Possum merino mix is the warmest ive tried.Speaking of possum - have a Ray Mears possum beanie - have to say its the biz. So light but so damn warm.

I had that hat, warm but not enough elastine or lycra in it, if I wore it on the bike it would blow off and in a decent wind would get under it if you were walking, when it got wet even Nora Batty's tights couldn't match it!!! Woolpower (wool felt) are also excellent, inexpensive and available everywhere : Woolpower felt insoles
Consider these:Have several pairs of 'Woolpower' / 'Ulfrotte' merino socks in various weights so can be worn individually or layered. Also have a pair of merino & possum fur that I got in NZ, they're pretty good too!

Definitely the biggest criteria when choosing a beanie is getting one with enough "stretchy" stuff in it to ensure it firstly fits over the ears and down the neck without leaving a huge amount of sag at the top and that it doesn't constantly slip back up. The best I have found so far is the Fjallraven Classic knit. I was fortuate to get mine on Ebay as an unwanted xmas gift for a hilarious price of £8 delivered. Best £8 I have ever spent and it was the deep forest colour. Warm, awesome coverage and stays on. I hunt and play golf in mine along with all other non active activities. Although I baulked at the price when I googled it just now, I have to say that if I lost it, I would immediately pay full price for a replacement.
Back to the OP, some people just have warm feet and some people just have cold feet. I have warm feet and Miss Cottis is the polar, cough, opposite. I have come to the conclusion that you can fuel up properly, layer up, cover your extremities and buy every warm animal skin or fur out there but cold feet will just be cold. In summer, I cannot lose heat so I just stay out the sun. My advice to people who suffer with the cold is to basically stay in the warm. If you must go out and want to try and keep warm, start off with warm feet and work on having layers of insulating air between socks and shoes. Miss Cottis will truss her feet up like an eskimo and then ram them in to footwear with no spare room. This is a recipe for disaster in my view but she won't be told. She will however tell me at every available moment how cold her feet are. You have to be able to wiggle your toes to encourage blood circulation all the time but she just goes in to shutdown and refuses to do anything other than moan.

Good insulated boots Paul. I’ve an old pair of koflach insulated climbing boots that I drag out when it’s very cold.
I remember as a kid wearing a pair of wool socks, wrapping my feet in tin foil snd then putting a thick pair of wool socks over, then a layer of newspaper around it all before putting my dads wellies on to keep warm.

I've worn these every day for over 10 years (not the same pair
) they are so comfortable, warm in the winter but cool in the summer.I like these if I want a really warm sock

Another vote for darn tough - very comfortable, warm in winter cool in summer (like all good quality wool boot socks). I’ve got about 10 pairs, I’ve worn no other sock at all for the last 10 years, 7 days a week. When they wear out I send them back and they send me new ones, no questions asked. So they actually work out a very very cheap sock
