Well I have found these 8x42 quite excellent for the money http://www.microglobe.co.uk/barr-stroud-series-4-hd-c-133_1246_1292.html - they knock spots off a 30 year old pair of Zeiss and modern coatings are not just the preserve of expensive German brands.
