Mitsubishi Shogun Sport

Morning all,

I’m thinking of changing my car and curious if anyone has experience with the new shape Shogun Sport? (2018 onwards)

They seem good value for a very capable off-roader. Are they truly as dismal on road as the Top Gear reviews and others suggest?

I currently have an A4 Avant Quattro, it’s a cracking car but ground clearance is poor and it’s getting on a bit.

Do you think the Shogun Sport with real coil springs drives noticeably better than a regular pick up truck (Hilux, Ranger)?

Trying to make a semi-sensible decision and avoid buying a disco 4….

Thanks in advance!

I've also been looking at them and think that they look great in a market with very few good options. I'd take the reviews with a pinch of salt.

I'd also be glad to hear from any owners.

I quite like the look of them
I’ve spoken to a couple of owners and the spoke highly of them

Both were towing caravans with them as well

Mitsubishi auto boxes are superb off road if they have the super select 4wd

We have a 14 plate LWB Shogun on the farm (auto diesel) it is ok onroad but heavy, so feels a little boat like but I personally drive an ancient SWB Mk1 Grand Vitara as my non daily driver shooting truck, so anything else feels positively robust and compliant onroad.

The Shogun is decent off road though but that weight is good and bad. It tows very well but on very very wet ground I prefer something lighter that doesn't tear up the fields so badly. You also need muds if you using a heavy vehicle offroad in proper gloopy conditions in winter whereas you can get away with AT's for longer with a lighter vehicle that makes raod use much better.

If you are going from an Audi to a Shogun, you will absolutely feel inferior quality on the road but off the charts better off road.

Mitsi's also rust, so make sure it is in good nick underneath and then looked after, especially if you will daily it on treated roads in winter.

My mechanic currently has an Mitsibushi Outback Commercial out the back that I keep looking at. It needs engine work and is currently sat there feeling sorry for itself but i feel it would make a decent compromise for a vehicle that I could live with as a daily as well being more than capable for getting a human, dogs, deer baths, lots of dead animals in etc. If you don't need 5 seats, that could be an option/compromise.

Aren't the sport and l200 essentially the same vehicle ? Nowt wrong with that IMHO,
But my experience with them has been that they drive similar to the pick up .
again , nothing wrong with that .
Yes same chassis, but the Shogun Sport has rear coils instead of leaf springs - which I suppose it going to feel a little better on road.

Apparently finished slightly better inside too but it’s not going to be anything too fancy!

Rav 4

Alternative

Just saying
I have looked at them too. The newer shape ones are very smart, however I’m not sure they have that much more capacity to carry stuff than my A4…

Have you taken your Rav 4 seriously off road? Some of the stalking and fishing we do up north required some deep wading in the trucks

My mate has one, we use it a lot. Good ground clearance, a bit basic inside but workable. The Renault 2.2 (think it’s a rebadged Renault) diesel has enough grunt and the gearbox seems good enough off and on road. I like it. It’s definitely more pick up line than my Subaru Outback which feels more like an estate car.

I’ve got a 2020 commercial.

Pros:

Off road ability is v good. It’s got good clearance, a proper low ratio box and a lockable rear diff.

To my eyes at least it’s fairly lux inside - electronic leather seats, heated seats, car play, blind spot sensors, good fan system in the rear for the dog etc.

Loads of space ( but mines the commercial obvs).

Cruises nicely on the motorway

Foot shorter than the l200

Cons

30 ish mpg

Corners like a barge

Suspension is still fairly stiff even with coil springs and you notice pot holes. It’s a noticeably better ride with some weight in the back.

You pays your money and you takes your choice…

Very helpful. A big fan of Subarus too - new foresters and outbacks look great but feeling the truck calling!

The Rav is my other half’s - it’s load capacity is huge as is its capability on semi rough tracks

It won’t be used for extraction - I’ve a L200 for that

Gave you the heads up as we looked at Shogun Sport and the Equivalent Nissan too

The Rav got it on aesthetics, reliability and drive ability - from my wife’s perspective

I was hoping she would buy an A4 Allroad 🤘
