MoA stalking & MRAD taget

Evening,

Wanted to sense check something, on all my rifles I currently run MRAD scopes, but these are all target based.

For my stalking rifle set up I want the Leica Fortis, but Leica only come in MoA. I'm going for the BDS turrets but wondering whether it is likely to cause issues in the field as its going to be so rare that I actually make turret adjustments in the field.

Am I setting myself up for annoyance or failure that I should just try and find an alternative scope in MRAD?

You are not setting yourself up for failure.

You won’t be ranging with reticles or really taking shots off wind calls. Even so a basic forumula is 1 mil is 3 moa.

Range, check ballistics range card, adjust turret and shoot.

No, unless you're shooting over 200m, it's unlikely you will need to adjust the elevation.
I'm imagining it will be 1/4 MOA adjustments, which are finer than .1mil (one 1/4 MOA 'click' being an adjustment of ~7mm @100m, one .1mil 'click' @100m being 10mm) , just make sure you are familiar with the values and it will keep your confidence levels high.

The scope will work fine for stalking BUT…. When you have to quickly dial for an unexpectedly long shot you will be making life hard for yourself by adopting an MOA system when you train using MRAD. Personally I would keep everything as uniform as possible.

Personally I’d stick to one measure it simply makes life easier lots of great scopes about in mrad

As others say stick to one system. I had to change when I used to work in yards and moa until I was given rf binos that only work in metres. It took a while to work out a way that worked. I now have rf binos that can work in mtres or yards. I keep them on metres because it would take time and brain power t change back

I don’t know why people get her up.

Pocket computers or simply your phone will have ballistics software that will work out a solution with any parameter you input. Simply print out the solution so if it’s pouring with rain you have it taped in the side of your stock covered in 100mph tape.

It didn’t stop the military before we had pocket computers it shouldn’t stop anyone taking a 300 yard shot at a deer.

A non issue in my book

A hunting rifle, with which you are familiar, will have known click values for a variety of distances

Even with a .22 (where there are likely more values to remember) you can write them on the stock or a small card attached to the scope

With a centre fire there are likely 2 or three click values even out to 300m - likely max quarry distance in UK

Who cares what those click values subtend to?

It only matters what numbers you need to dial on the scope for a specific bracketed range

With a centre fire, that bracket is larger than a .22 (which being a very loopy round, is intolerant of poor distance calls)

It’s like zeiss. The lower end products are MOA unfortunately.

But the reality is a non issue

Just checked and the fortis is 1cm clicks at 100 yards.... as is my leica eri ... the same as the kahles and scmidt and minox etc...
I think the lower end you're referring to are the zeiss v4 series?....

It shouldn't matter in reality at normal hunting ranges, just learn your drops at the target.

Zeiss V6 also which is a shame. The mag range is better than the V8 for me. Hence why I passed.

I’m sticking with the Minox I used last year when I came up to you. I’ve shot a few more deer in very poor light and it’s performed admirably.
