Moderator for .22lr?

Hi all,

I have a slot on my FAC for a .22lr. Unbelievably, I’ve never owned one of these before so looking to take the plunge.

I am looking for a wooden stocked, heirloom type rifle for life for occasional fair weather daytime rabbit shooting.

Noting the type of rifle I am after, some of the older models are uncut and with iron sights which I quite like.

My question is, given my intended shooting type, would I need a moderator? I don’t want to by a classic and cut it up

BRNO #2 would suit you admirably, if you can find one that hasn't had the barrel shortened. They're threaded in front of the foresight, so can use mod and retain classic good looks.

You’ll get a lot more rabbits with a moderator and subsonics.
No moderator will still kill rabbits, but they will clear off a bit sharpish. A couple for the pot and you’d be fine, more than that I’d recommend a mod.
SAK moderators are cheap and effective.
A CZ452 is a super, workhorse of a 22

I have one in .22lr (sorry not selling) with Iron sights, but always use a scope so not sure if the mod obscures the line of sight beyond the foresight.. think it would probably be OK as the mod that came with it is small diameter, probably half that of a SAK.

I know of someone selling a beautiful rifle for sale that is not screw cut and having no experience of a .22 (I still can’t believe that every time I say it ) I can’t appreciate how load it is with/without mod

Depending on how "heirloom " type it is (age. Value etc.) it may be better leaving as is? If only after rabbit at sub 12ftlb air rifle type range, you might get away with using something like CCI quiet segmented???
Just a thought.

It's fine with a Parker-Hale moderator. They seem to be very popular on the old #2, perhaps for that very reason?

I’d go for a bsa super sport 5 with a Parker hale moderator, cheap as chips but eminently capable

Probably is Parker-Hale. no maker's marks and very similar to what is on my old webley vulcan (but threaded rather than clamp on)

No problem. The quiets are "loopy" trajectory wise though, due to the high weight, but relatively low velocity. Very good for perfecting your hold over. I think most iorn sights would have been made for standard velocity. 22 so may struggle a bit with quiets, but where there's a wii there's a way

Thanks tricky, the rifle I may have an option on does have quite a low profile scope on it (just clears the rear iron sight) which I guess would be a bonus

Give it a go, if you like the rifle and as you said only for "occasional fair weather daytime Rabbiting" and your not after big bags off the same field in one go you might even be OK with SV.
I'm sure you know, but i think even sv .22lr is not overly loud. It did the job for many years unmoderated.

I had a neighbouring land owner concerned about me using my ( moderated) LR in a field near her horses, invited her to box the horses while I shot 3 rounds from 30m away.
Went back to check if she was happy with the noise and she said she was still waiting for me to shoot.


And with that, please let us know what you have been offered... you know you want to

See my last post, but if you feel the need, try to find someone with a LR to shoot it in your presence (shooting it yourself will always sound loud/ish) stand 20m away (not directly in front ) you will be surprised how quiet they are , even unmoderated (outdoors)

Looks a nice rifle. If all else fails, see if the seller will let you listen to it... as an aside, I don't have experience of the mausuer, but believe they also came in WMR. Make sure it is a LR. It will end badly if you feed a WMR LR rounds.

Another vote for the BRNO mod2 (or the slightly newer CZ452).
The BRNO might fit the bill regarding age, usually still has the iron sights, will shoot extremely well and often has a factory cut muzzle.
And as a plus, they can be picked up, often with scope and mod, for much less than £150.

Fabulous with subs.
Loopy, but predictable and consistent.
